En este trabajo, que tiene su origen en las lecciones que sustenté en la Universidad de Viena del año 1924 a 1937 y, posteriormente, del año 1946 en adelante, me propuse desarrollar, en perspectiva histórica, desde sus orígenes hasta la época presente, los problemas esenciales de la filosofía del derecho de la…cultura occidental. Han quedado excluidos de la exposición, no solo la filosofía del derecho de los pueblos que están más allá de las fronteras de Europa, sino también el pensamiento filosófico de Bizancio y de Rusia y las manifestaciones reflejas de la cultura occidental que han surgido en otros continentes. Fue, en cambio, indispensable, considerar algunos problemas teológico-morales, pues la filosofía del derecho del mundo occidental cristiano está íntimamente vinculada a la teología, si bien debe decirse que las cuestiones filosóficas pertenecen a un campo previo al de la revelación teológica. Pero a pesar de que este libro narra la historia de la filosofía del derecho del mundo occidental en sus grandes direcciones, su finalidad no es una simple exposición histórica, sino que más bien se propone.
