Tambien la afrenta es veneno relata la historia de Ines de Castro, hija natural de Pedro Fernandez de Castro y Aldonza Soares de Valladares; con cierto parentesco con la familia real castellana. Al morir su madre siendo nina Ines fue llevada a Valladolid, al castillo de Penafiel, donde creci…o en compania de Constanza Manuel, la hija del infante don Juan Manuel. En 1341, Constanza se caso con Pedro I de Portugal, llamado El Justiciero, y al poco tiempo este fue amante de Ines de Castro.La relacion puso en peligro la corona de Alfonso IV pues los hijos y los hermanos de Ines tenian ambiciones de poder. Asi, con la aprobacion de la corte, Alfonso ordeno que Ines fuese ejecutada. Tras el asesinato, Pedro lidero un levantamiento que sumio a Portugal en una larga guerra civil que solo termino poco antes de ser coronado, tras la muerte de Alfonso IV en el ano 1357. Entonces Pedro hizo publico su matrimonio e Ines fue coronada y desenterrada en 1360 en medio de la veneracion general. Este argumento aparece en otras obras de la epoca como Reinar despues de morir, entre otras. Tambien la afrenta es veneno relata la historia de Ines de Castro, hija natural de Pedro Fernandez de Castro y Aldonza Soares de Valladares; con cierto parentesco con la familia real castellana. En 1918 se publica la primera edición crítica de la mano de Francisco Rodríguez Marín. Según el hispanista norteamericano George Ticknor, es la más picante y animada entre todas las sátiras en prosa de la literatura moderna.

El capitan ejercia especialmente sus desafueros en…Cantillana, por lo que los arrieros y caminantes se alejaban del lugar y acostumbraban a decir: Vamonos por otra parte, porque el diablo esta en Cantillana. El diablo tambien podria ser en el imaginario popular el maestro Juan Pacheco, que acompano al rey Enrique IV en su viaje a Sevilla en 1469. Pacheco era una persona muy odiada en la capital sevillana, por lo que no se atrevio a entrar en ella y se hospedo en Cantillana. Hasta alli tenia que desplazarse el rey cada vez que queria despachar algun asunto con el aborrecido maestro. Luis Velez cambio los personajes y parte de la trama pero mantiene como trasfondo de su obra la leyenda de Cantillana.
