She went on to reign over the Wagnerian repertoire for decades, becoming a staple at Bayreuth and other major houses, including Vienna, Munich, and Covent Garden. Varnay offers candid, often sharply observed recollections of her collaborations with conductors such as Toscanini, Knappertsbusch, and Karajan, as well as singers like Birgit Nilsson and Jon Vickers.
