She went on to reign over the Wagnerian repertoire for decades, becoming a staple at Bayreuth and other major houses, including Vienna, Munich, and Covent Garden. Varnay offers candid, often sharply observed recollections of her collaborations with conductors such as Toscanini, Knappertsbusch, and Karajan, as well as singers like Birgit Nilsson and Jon Vickers. In der folgenden Zeit sang sie dort fast alle großen Wagnerpartien ihres Stimmfachs. Seit den frühen 1950er-Jahren war sie auch an deutschen Opernhäusern zu hören, gehörte von 1951-68 zum Stammpersonal der Bayreuther Festspiele und war ab 1955 regelmäßig an der Deutschen Oper am Rhein der Städte Düsseldorf und Duisburg engagiert.
