Oktober 1978 in Singapur) ist eine thailändisch-britische Geigerin und Skirennläuferin. Vanessa-Mae ist das Kind eines thailändischen Vaters und einer chinesischen Mutter. Sie wurde nach der Trennung ihrer Eltern von ihrem Stiefvater, dem Briten Graham Nicholson, adoptiert. 1982 zog sie nach London und erhielt zusätzlich zu ihrer thailändischen noch die britische Staatsbürgerschaft.[1] Musikkarriere Bereits mit drei Jahren begann Vanessa-Mae Klavier zu spielen und mit fünf Jahren Geige. Im Alter von acht Jahren nahm sie für ein halbes Jahr Violinunterricht in China. In ihrem zehnten Lebensjahr spielte sie 1988 mit dem London Philharmonic Orchestra. Ein Jahr später wurde sie in das Royal College of Music in London aufgenommen. In Deutschland erlangte sie erste Bekanntheit durch ihr 1995 erschienenes Album The Violin Player, worauf unter anderen das Stück Toccata und Fuge d-Moll BWV 565 enthalten ist. Am 30. Juni 1997 war sie die einzige ausländische Künstlerin, die bei der Vereinigungszeremonie von Hongkong und der Volksrepublik China auftreten durfte. Sie spielt sowohl auf klassischen (unter anderen von Giovanni Battista Guadagnini) als auch auf elektrischen Violinen, wie beispielsweise auf dem Album Xpectation (2003) von Prince. Sportkarriere Vanessa-Mae beim Olympischen Fackellauf in London (2008) Mit vier Jahren begann Vanessa-Mae mit dem Skifahren.[2] Im Jahr 2006 war sie zum ersten Mal in Zermatt. In den folgenden Jahren besuchte sie das Schweizer Bergdorf regelmäßig im Sommer. Seit September 2009 hat sie dort ihren ersten Wohnsitz. In Zermatt verfolgte sie ihr Ziel, sich für die Olympischen Winterspiele 2014 im Slalom und Riesenslalom für Thailand, das Heimatland ihres Vaters, zu qualifizieren.[3] Länder, die keinen Fahrer unter den Top 500 der Rangliste haben, dürfen laut Reglement pro Geschlecht jeweils einen Vertreter entsenden, sofern der Läufer in der entsprechenden Disziplin die geforderten 140 FIS-Punkte erreicht. Im Januar 2014 wurde bekannt, dass Vanessa-Mae mit ihrem Vorhaben erfolgreich war.[4][5] Im Ski Alpin war sie die erste Thailänderin bei Olympischen Winterspielen.[6] Sie qualifizierte sich für den Slalom und den Riesenslalom.[6] Sie trat unter dem Namen ihres Vaters Vanakorn an, startete jedoch nur im Riesenslalom.[7] Diesen beendete sie auf Rang 67, rund 50 Sekunden hinter der Olympiasiegerin Tina Maze.[8] Damit war sie die Letzte der platzierten Starterinnen. Im November 2014 wurde Vanessa-Mae vom Internationalen Skiverband (FIS) für vier Jahre gesperrt. This ha s made her a sensation, but judging from this disc, the publicity surrounding he r has nothing to do with either music or her playing. She is clearly a very tale nted violinist. Her technique is solid, sometimes even brilliant, but it's so ol d-fashioned that one cannot tell whether she slides so much because she likes it or because she can't find better fingerings, and her vibrato only gets wider wh en she tries to make it more intense. Her approach to the music is idiosyncratic , but shows no personal involvement or romantic feeling. The Brahms Scherzo and Bruch's Scottish Fantasia are aggressive and accented, rather than dramatic and passionate; the Beethoven Romance is sentimental, rather than expressive. Third Bach Partita comes off best: though a bit stiff and stodgy, it has charact er and really dances. The program ends with her own pop-rock arrangement of the Fantasia's final Scottish song. The recording does not serve her well. Poor engi neering makes her tone, though basically good, shrill and squeezed under stress; the piano sounds distant, but clangorous; the orchestra ragged and unbalanced. The booklet carries a skimpy biography and lots of hype, as well as a lengthy es say written by her that makes her sound arrogant, condescending, and defensive, though it is clear that she honestly aspires to be all things to all people. Condition: Very Good. Vanessa-Mae, vehemently opposed to any compartmentalising of music, describes the material on this album as techno-acoustic fusion. As far as instrumentatio n and recording techniques go, that's a pretty fair description. But when the su btitle is The Classical Album , Vanessa-Mae and her producer/composer Mike Bat t (of Wombles fame) stand accused of misleading their audience. Apart from the o pening Toccata in D, one of the prodigy Vanessa-Mae's favourite show pieces, a ll tracks are original compositions, most of them by Batt. What we hear are cont emporary, poppy pieces, rock drum and keyboard-based, and tailor made for Vaness a-Mae's high-energy yet delicate virtuosity. The fact that the talented Batt is audibly influenced by Michael Nyman does not make his compositions more classic al, but thankfully steers them out of the tedious realm of Classic Rock. Wid escreen is a track where the Mae-Batt synthesis works very well; both violinist and producer making the most of the technology-meets-tradition concept. Some of this is film score material, some shopping-mall ear drum fodder, other tracks y et again, revisit Mike Oldfield's old pastures--it is a matter of discussion whe ther this album defies all labelling or simply makes a point of wooing them al l in pursuit of the widest possible audience.
