Binding tight, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2014 Large Hardcover. 223, [1] pp. A monograph released in conjunction with an exhibition of Gericault's artworks. Theodore Gericault was an important artist of the Romantic movement, best known for The Raft of Medusa. From the foreword: "The exhibition focuses on two of the artist's central themes: the physical suffering and mental anguish of modern man. Gericault's depictions of existential situations - madness and illness, suffering and death - produced in the period between 1812 and his early death in 1824, were absolutely revolutionary. To this day his works, with their profoundly human subject matter, have lost none of their shattering impact. Gericault is modern in that he ennobled arbitrary people and creatures by making them the subjects of probing, even tragic portraits. He managed to present a realistic view of social conditions and in so doing expose the presence of violence, suffering, pain and death beneath the surface of everyday life. His engagement with the profound depths of human existence and man's inner nature manifests itself neither in voyeuristic imagined horrors nor in metaphysical speculation, but is rather related to the analytical stance of the inquisitive scientist or unbiased journalist. With his pictures of madness and death, combining the unsentimental gaze of science and Romanticism's positive notion of horror, Gericault played a substantial role in the development of modern subject matter.

Hard Cover. Condition: As New. 4to hardback, pp. 224, 260 b/w and col. ill. and plates, cm 24x28. This beautifully illustrated volume presents the French Romantic painter Théodore Géricault in a fascinating new light: through his works that addressed the physical and psychological torments of contemporary life. It includes four essays by eminent Géricault scholars. Hundreds of Géricault's paintings, reproduced in stunning colour reproductions, show how his emphasis on the suffering inherent in modern existence represented a completely new way of depicting life. Marrying the Romantics' fascination with horror and the unsentimental perspective of science with his images of madness and death, Géricault played a key role in the deliberate visualisation of the modern, existentially isolated, individual. When placed in context with his contemporaries, such as Goya, Fuseli and Adolph Menzel, Géricault's work upends the traditional opposition of realism and Romanticism, presenting them as interrelated, sharing approaches.

Hardcover, 325 x 250 x 25 mm, 336p, 300 colour illustrations, English/ Dutch (NL) edition. ISBN 9789490693992. In recent years Sam Dillemans painted about 300 portraits together, especially influential authors, but also scientists, composers and singers. In his typically dynamic and flowing style Dillemans completed the 300 portraits almost in one sitting. Most are in black and white in volatile flowing lines placed on canvas, others are lifted by subtle hints of brush lines in color. Recognizable or not, it depends on the viewer off, and how the artist chooses to reveal to his impressive canvases. Again choose Dillemans an impressive series that the man, his facial expression and his central place. Some models are almost instantly recognizable, others demand more from the viewer. The result is at times disturbing series that necessitates deep observation, to probing the concept portraiture and a deep appreciation for the clever people who Dillemans on his way pictorial together.
