Helmers kreeg straatnamen in Amsterdam, en Vondel leeft voort in een park. Maar worden onze dichters nog gelezen? Velen, zoals Nicolaa…s Beets en Frederik van Eeden, zijn bekender als prozaschrijvers. Talrijke anderen, van Catherina Boudewijns tot Julius Vuylsteke, zijn zelfs bij naam nauwelijks bekend. De Spiegel van de Nederlandse Poezie, samengesteld door Victor E. Van Vriesland, is sinds 1939 de standaardbloemlezing van de Nederlandse en Vlaamse poezie. In 1955 bracht Van Vriesland het werk, dat de Middeleeuwen tot de Beweging van Tachtig beslaat, in een definitieve redactie uit. Dit werd in 1979 herdrukt, samen met het door Hans Warren voortgezette deel II over de poezie van de twintigste eeuw. Het eerste deel, dat bijna duizend pagina's beslaat, is nu afzonderlijk herdrukt. Deze bloemlezing is representatief voor diverse literaire stromingen, maar weerspiegelt ook de persoonlijke keuzes van Van Vriesland, die in 1960 de P.C. Hooftprijs ontving. De selectie omvat werk van onder anderen Anna Bijns, Constantijn Huygens, en Joost van den Vondel, evenals anonieme verzen en vergeten 'minor poets'. Met bijdragen van meer dan driehonderd Nederlandstalige dichters, van de 12e-eeuwse Henric van Veldeke tot de in 1910 overleden Alex Gutteling, vormt dit boek een spiegel voor elke poezieliefhebber.
