Toentertijd was het een van de eerste moderne vestingen met bastions in Nederland. Het fort zou niet alleen het ei…land Walcheren en de toegang tot de haven van Middelburg beschermen, maar ook de Schelde als poort tot Vlaanderen en Brabant; de economische motor en het bestuurscentrum van het Habsburgse Rijk moesten immers tegen Frankrijk worden verdedigd. De eeuwen erna zou Fort Rammekens verschillende functies vervullen. In de tachtigjarige oorlog was het van essentieel belang voor de controle over Walcheren. De Rede van Rammekens vormde vanaf de Middeleeuwen de belangrijkste havenplaats van het eiland. Als verdediging tegen de Engelsen in de vroeg-negentiende eeuw werd het door Napoleon grondig verbouwd, om tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog op last van de Duitse bezetter in een verdedigingslinie tegen de geallieerden op te gaan. Nu heeft Fort Rammekens vooral betekenis als monument van geschiedenis, kunst en natuur. Een cultuurpodium en toeristische attractie in een bijzonder gebied. Staatsbosbeheer ? sinds 1972 eigenaar van het fort ? lost met het verschijnen van dit boek een belofte in: het publiektoegankelijk maken van de onderzoeksgegevens uit de periode 2011-2013 waarin Fort Rammekens een uitgebreide consolidatie onderging. De bouwsporen die bij deze werkzaamheden tevoorschijn kwamen, werpen in combinatie met uitvoerig archiefonderzoek nieuw licht op de geschiedenis van deze doorleefde vesting. 1520 g.

The volume is complete as per the index and collates with the copy in the Boston medical Library which lacks the literature section. There is offsetting to the endpapers & pastedowns. Very good. The contents include: "Cataract als Fruhsymptom bei Tetanie" by Dr. Erwin Treu; "Colobom am Schnerveneintritt mit normaler Sehscharfe" by Dr. Jan van der Hoeve; "Ueber Scleralruptur mit Vorfall der Netzhaut" by Dr. Oscar Gross; "Pseudophakia fibrosa, eine faserige Scheinlinse, hervorgegangen aus der Tunica vasculosa lentis" by Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Czermak, published posthumously; "Pupillenstudien" by Professor Dr. Hummelsheim in Bonn. Dr. Erwin Treu (1875-1937) was the first permanent ophthalmologist in Split, Croatia. During World War 1 he performed ophthalmological operations for cataracts, glaucoma, trachoma and eye injuries. Jan van der Hoeve (1878-1952) was a Dutch ophthalmologist who made an early description of Waardenburg syndrome. He is recognized for his concept of neurocutaneous syndromes. Wolfgang Oscar Gross (1881-1967) trained at the eye clinic of the university in Wurzburg under Carl von Hess. He was a renowned expert in the field of clinical pancreas research. Wilhelm Paul Czermak (1856-1906) was the director of the Prague Eye Clinic from 1895 until his death in 1906. Eduard Hummelsheim (1868-1952) was a German ophthalmologist associated with the University of Bonn was a pioneer of transposition surgery.
