Illustrations (photographs--some in color--and drawings)Sticker residue on back cover. Jørn Oberg Utzon AC (9 April 1918 29 November 2008) was a Danish architect. In 1957, he won an international design competition for the Sydney Opera House in Australia. Utzon's revised design, which he completed in 1961, was the basis for the landmark, although it was not completed until 1973. When the Sydney Opera House was declared a World Heritage Site in 2007, Utzon became only the second person to have received such recognition for one of his works during his lifetime. Other noteworthy works include Bagsværd Church near Copenhagen and the National Assembly Building in Kuwait. He also made important contributions to housing design. Utzon attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (193742) and was influenced early on by Alvar Aalto. Jorn Utzon's Opera House has a heroic quality. Utzon referred to it himself as a kind of 'cathedral', analogous to a Gothic church in the way that light and movement play across its public spaces. Its complex shell-like roof structures echo Gothic arches in section, but the building breaks with all precedent in its three-dimensional form. Finding a practical solution to the construction of these roofs occupied the architect and the engineer Ove Arup for many years, necessitating considerable experimentation with pre-cast concrete technology. Disputes with his client led to Utzon's withdrawal from the project. After a 16-year gestation, it opened in 1973 having already become an Australian national icon. Sydney-based architectural historian and critic Philip Drew is a widely published author or essays and architectural books which include: Sydney Opera House; Touch This Earth Lightly: Glenn Murcutt In His Own Words; New Tent Architecture; and an unauthorized biography of Jørn Utzon, The Masterpiece: Jørn Utzon, a Secret Life. Anthony Browell, photographer, was born in England and studied at the Brighton Art College and the Ealing Art School before becoming a freelance photographer. Arriving in Australia in 1969, he began his long career in Sydney, working as a magazine photographer before helping to found the Australian Centre for Photography, the workshop of which he managed for some years from 1976. He worked in editorial and advertising photography until 1980. Returning to photography in 1984, he has concentrated on editorial and portrait work, founding Oki Doki Productions in 1993 with writer Jan Howlin. He is now best known as a photographer of architecture and interiors; his work is widely published in design and architecture magazines. Lindy is a founding director of Bark Design Architects and a registered architect in Queensland and New South Wales, with 27 years of professional experience. Lindy works personally with every client to develop a design to meet and exceed clients expectations. Lindy leads Bark with a wealth of international knowledge and experience after several years working in London, between 1989 1994. On returning to Australia in 1995, Lindy was project architect with James Grose and worked as part of the Bligh Voller Nield design team on the Sydney Olympic Stadium. Anthony Browell (Photography) and Lindy Atkin (Dra (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: New. Half a century has passed since Australia's New South Wales government launched a competition to give Sydney a new music and performance centre. The result of that competition is the magnificent Sydney Opera House designed by the visionary Danish architect Jorn Utzon (b.1918) and the starting point for "Building a Masterpiece: The Sydney Opera House". When construction began, few could have imagined the enduring impact that Utzon's creation would have on Sydney, nor indeed Australia. But any great feat of imagination and ingenuity creates sub-plots, and the Opera House, perhaps more than any other twentieth-century structure of its stature, has generated many. "Building a Masterpiece" explores the many untold chapters in the long history of the Opera House's gestation, development and completion - of individuals whose careers were made or broken by the Opera House, the companies whose reputations were secured through their association with the building, and the pioneering construction methods, innovative technologies and methodologies developed to meet the demands of its unprecedented design and challenging construction. The workers who built the building, the politicians, architects and members of the public who championed it and its often beleaguered architect are discussed too as is its current world status as a symbol of Australia. Comprising an introduction and ten engaging essays, written by eminent authors and experts in the field, this comprehensive and richly illustrated book offers a unique account of the Sydney Opera House and is essential reading for anyone wishing to gain fresh insights into the complex history of this iconic building.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Can Lis - Jørn Utzon 'When an architect designs and builds for himself, he has the opportunity to go to the edge of his own imagination'. —Line Nørskov Davenport Enamoured with the light of the Mediterranean sun, Can Lis, Jørn Utzon is a visual ode to one of the most iconic homes of the 20th century. An early ideal for design inspired by place, Can Lis rests on a Mallorcan cliff, nearly concealed by the marés stone from which it was made. Photographs by Simon Watson chart the movement of light along the compound that served as Utzon's family home for over two decades, his first permanent residence following his work on the Sydney Opera House. A curated selection of archival photographs, sketches, and blueprints mined from Utzon's private collection guide readers from early plans for Can Lis to the everyday ways the home was inhabited. A seminal essay by the late Utzon himself explores his relationship to nature, while the architect's son, Jan Utzon, recalls his family's connection to Mallorca in conversation with Apartamento editorial director Robbie Whitehead. Conjuring the island's endless horizon, Line Nørskov Davenport, director of exhibitions at the Utzon Center, reflects on Utzon's departure from the Opera House and the sanctuary he eventually found in Mallorca. 'Is this paradise?', she wonders of an initial sketch that inspired Can Lis, a dream ultimately realised in the house's meditative vistas, stirred only by the salt breeze of the sea. Can Lis, Jørn Utzon is sponsored by Ferm Living and features an exclusive foreword by Phillipp Materna, head of brand and design. Apartamento, 2025 Hardcover, 120pp 285 x 240mm.
