Contact seller5-star sellerFirst issue of TV Times (1955), the British weekly television listings magazine introduced to coincide with the launch of Independent Television (ITV) on September 22, 1955, ending the BBC's monopoly on British television broadcasting. Published two days before ITV's inaugural transmission, the magazine provided viewers with programming schedules for the new commercial television service, initially serving the London area through Associated-Rediffusion and ATV. Its debut marked the introduction of a competing television network and a new form of entertainment publishing in Britain. TV Times. Vol. 1, No. 1. London: September 20, 1955. First issue. 39 pages. Staplebound. The front cover features Scottish actress Patricia Dainton, appearing in ITV's early serial Sixpenny Corner, alongside American television star Lucille Ball, whose sitcom I Love Lucy was scheduled for Saturday evening broadcasts. Page 5 contains short biographical articles about both actresses. Additional illustrated features introduce television personalities and forthcoming programs, accompanied by schedules for the new network. The inaugural issue includes listings for ITV's opening night on September 22, featuring the official ceremony at London's Guildhall, variety entertainment, drama, boxing, and news broadcasts. The publication appeared during a fundamental change in British broadcasting, as the establishment of ITV introduced advertising-supported television and competition for viewers previously served exclusively by the BBC. Initially distributed in London, TV Times subsequently expanded through regional editions as commercial broadcasting reached other parts of Britain. Its first issue preserves the original programming arrangements and promotional presentation of ITV's launch, including the prominence given to British and American entertainers in the network's early schedules.…
