Born into an ethnically Buryat family of practicing Buddhists in the Trans-Baikal region of Russia, Tsybikov studied at the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg University, where his professors included S.F. Oldenberg and V.V. Grigoriev. In the late 19th century, European travelers and researchers were not permitted into Tibet; however, Tsybikov, as a Buddhist, was permitted entry as a part of a group of Buddhist pilgrims in 1899-1902. He traveled extensively during his time in Tibet, visiting major cities, observing religious rituals, and even meeting the Dalai Lama. His notes and--crucially--his photographs became an invaluable resource for his contemporaries who were unable to visit the region, and they have continued to provide unparalleled insight for subsequent generations of scholars. 1362151. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The first edition of Gombojab Tsybikov's landmark travel account Buddhist Pilgrim to the Shrines of Tibet, published in Petrograd in 1919 under the auspices of the Russian Geographical Society. Born into a Buryat Buddhist family and educated at St Petersburg University, Tsybikov became the first academically trained Russian scholar?and one of the very first outsiders?able to enter Tibet disguised as a Buddhist pilgrim, travelling through Mongolia and Central Tibet between 1899 and 1902. His diaries formed the basis of this monumental work, combining the precision of a trained ethnographer with the immediacy of a first-hand travel narrative. Issued during the turbulent Petrograd years immediately following the Russian Revolution?hence the imprint "Petrograd," the name used for St Petersburg between 1914 and 1924?this edition represents the first complete publication of Tsybikov's Tibetan journals and visual documentation. The Russian Geographical Society, one of Imperial Russia's most prestigious scholarly institutions, sponsored the expedition and later published its results, recognising the exceptional ethnographic and geographical importance of Tsybikov's work. Richly illustrated throughout with high-quality photographic reproductions and drawings based on the author's original field material, the volume preserves some of the earliest authentic images of Lhasa, its monasteries, sacred architecture, monastic interiors, ritual objects, pilgrims, and everyday urban life. Particularly remarkable are the unique documentary images of religious complexes, architectural details, and monastic structures, some of which were later altered, damaged, or destroyed during the political upheavals of the twentieth century, making this publication an irreplaceable visual record of pre-modern Tibet. The work remains one of the earliest and most important eyewitness studies of Tibetan religious, social, and material culture ever published. In fine half-binding, preserving the original printed wrappers (spotted). Occasional minor spotting and light staining and water stains to a few leaves, word Tsagalgan written in pen on page 190. Overall a very good, crisp copy.

Condition: Sehr gut. Bound photocopy in 2 volumes, x, 471 pages, 264 illustrations (several full plate illustrations), 13 maps and ground plans, very good condition. The original is variously described as being published either in 1918 or 1919 - actually both is true. The title page is being dated 1919, the original wrapper (also copied) 1918. At the height of the Russian revolution (compare e.g. Brun, Troublous Times for a description of Petersburg - and Turkestan - around this time), this book was finally published in comparatively fine quality with plenty of illustrations (several full plate), plans and maps. Several of the oldest available photos of Central Tibetan Monasteries are only published here, like photos of Samye and the 3 great monasteries around Lhasa, as well as of the major sites of Lhasa. Photocopy quality of the plates is however not good. A French and an English translation of this book have appeared, only the English edition reproduces some of the original illustrations, mostly however in smaller format than in the original. Also numerous portraits and paintings of dignitaries, monks and hierarchs as well as of objects of religious and daily life. Very scarce in the original. Heavy set, additional shipping is likely. ru Gewicht in Gramm: 1900.
