Gombojab Tsybikov (1873-1930) was an explorer and photographer. Born into an ethnically Buryat family of practicing Buddhists in the Trans-Baikal region of Russia, Tsybikov studied at the Oriental Faculty of St. Petersburg University, where his professors included S.F. Oldenberg and V.V. Grigoriev. In the late 19th century, European travelers and researchers were not permitted into Tibet; however, Tsybikov, as a Buddhist, was permitted entry as a part of a group of Buddhist pilgrims in 1899-1902. He traveled extensively during his time in Tibet, visiting major cities, observing religious rituals, and even meeting the Dalai Lama. His notes and--crucially--his photographs became an invaluable resource for his contemporaries who were unable to visit the region, and they have continued to provide unparalleled insight for subsequent generations of scholars. 1362151.
