About the book >.>.> Negative Portraits of Hands and Feet by Mei Chen Tseng explores the intricate interplay of light and shadow on human extremities. The book delves into the ways in which the hands and feet, often overlooked, reveal deeper emotional states and narratives through their forms and expressions. As the journey through a MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) train transitions from the brightness of Taipei city to the quieter suburbs, the changing light reveals a dynamic spectacle of shadows that shift in response to subtle alterations in environment.Tseng illustrates that these shadows, found in the darker, less illuminated areas of the body, often take on shapes that are more human than those visible under bright light. Shadows form vivid representations?from whimsical figures like horses and dolphins to ominous symbols such as a reaper's scythe?reflecting the variances in mood and emotion. The hands and feet, with their complex structures of blood vessels and joints, act as tangible points of expression, capable of portraying emotions that remain hidden in the face. Each chapter invites readers to consider that within darkness, there exists a convergence of all colours rather than mere absence of light; shadows embody the desires and struggles inherent in the quest for illumination. Through this exploration, Tseng invites a contemplation of duality in all things, symbolised by the stark contrasts of light and shadow on hands and feet, which serve as unique portraits of the human experience. This book encourages an appreciation of the often-unnoticed beauty and complexity of our extremities, revealing their power to communicate life's myriad emotions. (LL).…
