The author was inspired to create a new standard of iron purity after investigating the beneficial effects of melting iron in a vacuum, resulting in a product with only 0.015% carbon content. The author begins with a detailed review of prior research on the subject, noting that silicon was found to increase the strength of iron and at the same time make it harder and more brittle if added in quantities above a few percent. Most notably, the author cites Barrett, Brown, and Hadeldâs 1900 discovery that iron-silicon alloys had a higher maximum permeability and a decidedly lower hysteresis loss than pure iron, making them ideal for use in electrical machinery. In the main portion of the book, the author details their own experiments, which confirmed the findings of previous researchers that iron-silicon alloys have superior magnetic properties to pure iron. However, their work also revealed a critical point at which the alloy becomes non-forgeable, occurring at a silicon content of 2.57%.
