A story that has remained cryptic in form, hidden from history. I am referring to Gen. Robert E. Lee's true tactical plan for Gettysburg: his intention, throughout the battle, to converge his forces upon and to seize Cemetery Hill on the Union center. Lee's training and years of experience as a soldier led him to understand that Cemetery Hill was the key to the Union position, and from the evening of July 1 until the conclusion of the battle on July 3, he held to that belief. When Lee referred in his official report to the general plan at Gettysburg, the objective of that plan was Cemetery Hill." So begins author and Gettysburg National Military Park historian Troy D. Harman's revisionist study, Lee's Real Plan at Gettysburg. For well over one hundred years, analysis of the Gettysburg Campaign has centered around a set of commonly held beliefs, among them a mistaken interpretation of Confederate general Robert E. Lee's goals for the battle. After years of research, Troy Harman has concluded that Lee's central and unchanged objective from the late afternoon of July 1, 1863, through the failure of Longstreet's assault on July 3, was to "render Cemetery Hill untenable." Harman's position as a ranger at Gettysburg N.M.P. has allowed him an unparalleled opportunity to walk the battlefield, visiting and revisiting the ground at the heart of his theory. This intimate familiarity with the landscape~both as it looks today and as it appeared in 1863~helps to inform and support his argument. Harman's extensive research into official records of the battle as well as first person accounts written by its participants further bolsters his position. By challenging the status quo, Lee's Real Plan at Gettysburg revitalizes the discussion of the Confederate leader's true tactical objectives for the battle and opens up a new opportunity for debate among Civil War enthusiasts and historians.

Paperback. Condition: New. For almost 100 years, analysis of the Gettysburg Campaign has been centered around a set of commonly held beliefs, among them an oversimplified view of Confederate general Robert E. Lee's goals for the battle. Author and Gettysburg National Military Park historian Troy D. Harman believes this view is m…isinformed. Lee's Real Plan at Gettysburg presents a provocative new theory regarding Lee's true tactical objectives during this pivotal battle of the American Civil War.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. In "Lees Real Plan at Gettysburg," Troy Harman offers a whole new way of looking at Lee's command decisions at Gettysburg. By arguing for the centrality of Cemetery Hill in Lee's planning, he challenges the significance usually accorded to Little Round Top…, forces a reconsideration of Dan Sickles's controversial forward movement of his III Corps, suggests that the fighting on nearby Culp's Hill deserves greater appreciation, and encourages scholars and visitors alike to apply a critical eye to the 'givens' in traditional Gettysburg history." - Carol Reardon, author of Pickett's Charge in History and Memory Illustrated. Notes. Bibliography. Stated First Edition, Fifth printing. As new hardcover in a as new, mylar covered, unclipped dust jacket. The photos on the listing page are of the actual book for sale, NOT stock photos. Always carefully packaged and shipped quickly.
