Hard Back. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Second Printing. 224 Pages Indexed. Black boards with silver lettering to the spine. Industrial and ironclad power reached its culmination in the war that engulfed Europe. As events would prove, however, the products of the industrial system of the 20th century, inclu…ding the capacity of the system to transfer vast reserves of manpower from civilian to military employment at short notice, much more greatly favoured strategies of defence than offence. The outcome was a war of attrition and immobile fronts, eventually to be unlocked only when a second wave of industrial innovation yielded means - the tank, the aeroplane - to break the stalemate. This is a complete history of World War I. It is illustrated throughout with color maps photographs with some in color. It incorporates computer-generated cartography to bring the battlefields to life. Contents: The Coming of War, 1914, 1915, Peripheries, 1916, 1917, 1918, and Conclusion. Cooper, Paul - Design (illustrator).

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. First Edition. Hardcover. First Edition. The Political Diaries of C. P. Scott. 1911-1928. Previous owners name to inside cover. Slight foxing to end inside covers and edge. Wear, tear and repair to D/J. Edited With an Introduction and Commentary by Trevor Wilson. C. P. Sc…ott, unlike most modern newspaper editors, was an engaged politician. Indeed, for fifteen years of his editorship he had sat as a Liberal M.P. This inevitably affected his relations with public men; and gives their particular flavour to the diaries. As Professor Trevor Wulson writes: 'They are not a record of Scott's day-to-day life and only rarely recount conversations in the northern city where he lived and worked. They are an account of what, durng his periodic visits to the south, he learned about affiars of State. Thus their chief interest lies in what they reveal about the decisions that were being taken at the top and the men who were taking them. Although a journalist he was not looking for news when he went calling in London. His intention was political. He wished to know what the government were proposing to do and where possible to influence its actions'. Illustrated. 509 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Academic and Scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Educational Reference Literature.). B/W Illus (illustrator).

Soft cover. Condition: New. xiv + 395 pages ; 24 cm. Is Myanmar (Burma) democratizing, or is it moving towards a new form of authoritarianism, perhaps one more consonant with other contemporary authoritarian regimes in Asia?Coming at a critical time, and one of growing interest in this Southeast Asian country among researchers a…nd policy-makers, Debating Democratization in Myanmar addresses this complex question from a range of disciplinary and professional perspectives. Chapters by leading international scholars and practitioners, activists and politicians from Myanmar and around the world cover political and economic updates, as well as the problems of democratization; the re-engagement of democratic activists and exiles in domestic affairs; the new parliament, the electoral system, and everyday politics; prospects for the economy; ethnic cooperation, contestation and conflict; the role of the army and police forces; and conditions for women. Together they constitute an empirically deep and analytically rich source of readable and relevant material for anyone keen to obtain a greater understanding of what is happening in Myanmar today, and why.
