Covers are bright with rubbing at the corner tips, gilt page tops, both hinges are loose with paper cracked but webbing holding, endpapers are browned, front and back pastedowns have notations that book belonged to the Western Costume Co of Los Angeles as well as a blindstamp at bottom of title page. Illustrated with full color plates with tissue guards. Rear of book has 4 pgs of Index, fold-out map in excellent condition, and 1 page of an ad of the works by Albert P Calvert.

Text and illustrations are unmarked; pages are bright, though the page edges are age toned. Previous owner's signature one the first free end page. The rear hinge is torn, making the binding weak. Covers are edge worn, with frayed cloth at the corners and at the head and base of the spine. The cloth is torn where the back cover meets the spine; there is water damage at the lower edge of the back cover. The spine is faded. No dust jacket. International/Priority shipping at cost. 322pp.

Lime green cloth with gilt embossed spine, a little dustiness but all very good and firm, half-title a little spotted. No inscriptions. Small octavo. *As we find today publishers sometimes made books appear to sell well by adding "edition numbers" larger than they actually were. This book does state on reverse of the title 1st printed Aug 1906 and then 2nd edition beneath dated 1906 also. However the 1910 catalogue would belie this statement as it being a fast seller.

The book has been rebound in vellum with Ferguson crest and motto & gilt decoration to the spine and boards. Leather title label. on spine. Teg. Bound by Simson & Co, Hertford. The firm exhibited at the 1929 British Industries Fair in Birmingham. Some soiling and scuffs, mainly to the front board. Title label chipped along right edge. Slightly sprung. Inside, a previous owner has pasted in pictures and newspaper cuttings relating to Venice with dates from 1922-1929. These are on the first 5 blank endpapers and blank verso of the title page. A small cutting has been removed from the title page leaving small residue and ink date & 'Morning Post' (newspaper) reference.Also to: verso of title page,at end of preface, blank facing contents page, to blank of p.7 with ink smudge, p.123, rear blank endpapers and to patterned endpapers.
