Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. About The Book: This work offers a glimpse into Persian humor, a clever play on female customs and superstitions. It presents itself as a serious piece, resembling a solemn code of laws, authored by five matron lawgivers aided by two others. The original manuscript, titled "Kitabi Ku…lsum Naneh," revolves around the rules and maxims of the principal lady-judge, Kulsum Naneh, focusing on the domestic rights and customs of Persian women. This work, often underestimated by oriental scholars, reveals the whimsical aspects of Persian domestic life, challenging stereotypes about Eastern women. It offers valuable insights into Persian society's moral dynamics and human nature's multifaceted nature. Despite its playful tone, it is a worthwhile exploration of genuine Persian life, dispelling misconceptions about women's roles in the East. About The Translator: James Atkinson (17801852) was a multi-talented figure in British India, known as a surgeon, Persian scholar, and artist. He initially arrived in India in 1802 as a surgeon and later worked at the Calcutta Mint and as the editor of the Calcutta Gazette. His association with British colonial authorities included meetings with Lord Minto and Lord Bentick, though they had a notable dispute. Atkinson was renowned for his Persian studies and translations into English. He was also an amateur artist who published illustrated books, including his travels in Afghanistan. His career included a stint in England and the translation of Persian texts, earning accolades. The Title 'Customs and Manners of the Women of Persia And their Domestic Superstitions written/authored/edited by Translator: James Atkinson', published in the year 2023. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. About The Book: The Shahnameh or Shahnama is a long epic poem written by the Persian poet Ferdowsi between c. 977 and 1010 CE and is the national epic of Greater Iran. Consisting of some 50,000 "distichs" or couplets (two-line verses), the Shahnameh is one of the world's longest epic… poems. It tells mainly the mythical and to some extent the historical past of the Persian Empire from the creation of the world until the Muslim conquest in the seventh century. Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the greater region influenced by Persian culture such as Armenia, Dagestan, Georgia, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan celebrate this national epic. The work is of central importance in Persian culture and Persian language, regarded as a literary masterpiece, and definitive of the ethno-national cultural identity of Iran. Ferdowsi started writing the Shahnameh in 977 and completed it on 8 March 1010.The Shahnameh is a monument of poetry and historiography, being mainly the poetical recast of what Ferdowsi, his contemporaries, and his predecessors regarded as the account of Iran's ancient history. Many such accounts already existed in prose, an example being the Abu-Mansuri Shahnameh. A small portion of Ferdowsi's work, in passages scattered throughout the Shahnameh, is entirely of his own conception. About The Translator: Dr. James Atkinson (17801852), a notable British orientalist, a scholar of the Persian language and literature, and the translator of Ferdowsi's Rostam o Sohrab, Ne?ami's Layli o Majnun, the popular Persian romance of ?atem Tai, and others. Atkinson was born in Durham on 9 March 1780, and demonstrated early on an exceptional talent for Versification. He studied medicine in Edinburgh and London, and was appointed assistant surgeon in the Bengal establishment in 1805. He studied Persian in his free time and in 1810 began his verse translation of the story of Sohrab. Although these translations reveal the many pitfalls of pioneer work in the field, still they are a marked improvement over the cumbersome phraseology and elaborate diction of such late eighteenth-century translators of the Shah Nameh as Joseph Champion. This tendency in turn reflects the departure in English Romanticism from the neo-Classical attitude towards Oriental literatures in general and towards epic poetry and poetic translation in particular. The Rev. James Augustus Atkinson (1780-1852), Honorary Canon of Manchester, died on Saturday at the age of 80, and his elder son, the Rev. Christie Chetwynd Atkinson, D.D., rector of Ashton-on-Mersey, died at The Whims, Conway, aged 55. Canon J. A. Atkinson was the third son of James Atkinson, the well-known Persian scholar who in 1832 produced a translation of the "Shah Nameh" of Firdausi. The Title 'The Shah Nameh: of the Persian Poet Firdausi written/authored/edited by Translator: James Atkinson, Editor: J. A. Atkinson', published in the year 2023. The ISBN 9788121291644 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 448 (Pages). The publisher of this title is Gyan Publishing House. This Book is in English. From the library of Alexander George Ellis of the Royal Asiatic Society (d. 1942), who published several catalogues of the Arabic Printed Books and manuscripts at the British Museum. James Atkinson (1780-1852) was a British orientalist that began his career as a medical officer onboard an East Indiaman, after studying medicine at Edinburgh and London. In 1805 he was appointed an assistant surgeon in the Bengal service and placed in medical charge of the station of Bakarganj, near Dacca. In his leisure he devoted himself to the study of the Persian language with considerable success. Atkinson's Persian translations in both prose and verse are his chief title to fame, and this edition of Soohrab is his first publication.
