Includes Preface and Index. All pages are in fine unmarked condition and the spine/binding is in exceedingly tight and square condition (see photographs). "My recollections of Sigmund Freud, since they concern the development of our friendship, are probably of less scientific interest than some other memoirs of him, but they have the compensation, I believe, of casting a far brighter light on his personality, which to this day is often misunderstood. These recollections cover the period from my first meeting with Freud in Vienna in February, 1907, to his last letter to me, written from England in July 1938. Aside from personal contacts at the international psychoanalytic congresses of Nuremberg, Weimar, Munich, and The Hague, I saw him five times in Vienna, once at Kreuzlingen, and once in the Semmering. But the principal medium of our friendship was our exchange of letters. I possess one hundred and one pieces of writing in Freud's hand - ten communications on visiting cards, eight postcards, and eighty-three letters - dating from April 1908 to July 1938. Despite the interest that every word written by Freud presents for his biography, it would take us too far afield to reproduce in the present volume all of his letters in their entirely; therefore, I have presented the material in its chronological sequence, citing only those passages which seem to be characteristic of him in either personal or scientific matters and elucidating as best I could the subjects under discussion. I regret very much that this book could not have been published earlier, and in particular that it was thus not available to Ernest Jones for use in the first two volumes of his outstanding biography of Freud. What kept me so long from publishing it was a sentence in one of Freud's letters of 1936: "For over a quarter-century we have been loyal to each other as a matter of course, and made little fuss about this." If I have finally overcome my scruples, and am now making "a fuss" about our friendship, it is due to the urging of my friends and the encouragement of Anna Freud. Photostatic copies of all of Freud's letters to me are deposited in the Sigmund Freud Archive." - Ludwig Binswanger, Kreuzlingen, October 1955, from the Preface.
