The museum formed by John Tradescant, the gardener of Charles I, and his son, John Tradescant the Younger, was considered one of the sights of London in the mid seventeenth century. Such collections which were known as "Cabinets of Rarities" with their mixture of natural history and "artificial" or man-made curiosities, reflected the intellectual concerns of their age. John Tradescant had been to Muscovy and Algeria to collect specimans, while his son had travelled to Virginia several times. Much of the work was drafted by Elias Ashmole who also paid for its publication. He later acquired the museum and it formed the bulk of what was to become the Ashmolean Museum, which opened in 1683 as Britain's first public museum. A very nice copy in the publisher's black cloth.
