Gehen wir einem Goldenen Zeitalter denkender Maschinen entgegen, die den menschlichen Ãbersetzer gleichwertig ersetzen kà nnen? Kà nnen Maschinen im strengen Sinn lernen zu übersetzen? Wie lernen sie es? Wie lernen wir, wie Maschinen übersetzen und lernen? Die Probleme sind zahlreich. Eines scheint aber gewiss: Zunächst muss der Stand der Dinge dokumentiert werden: Was vermag die maschinelle Ãbersetzung heute? Ist sie fähig, das vielfach verzweigte Regelwerk der Sprache algorithmisch zu rekonstruieren, Nuancen sprachlichen Ausdrucks, schà pferische Leistungen und Regelverstà Ãe nachzubilden? Diese Studie legt maschinell erzeugte Ãbersetzungen aus dem Deutschen ins Slowakische zugrunde. Die Texte sind authentisch. Sie werden der journalistischen Sphäre und der Welt der Reklame entnommen. Ãber das Sprachenpaar Deutsch/Slowakisch ist bis dato wenig publiziert worden, zumal unter translatologischem Aspekt. Dabei kà nnte die Ãbersetzungsanalyse erhellend wirken: Wie geht der Computer mit den besonderen Herausforderungen dieser Paarung um? Das Deutsche zeigt eine ausgeprägt polysynthetische Eigenart. Wie gibt das Slowakische die notorisch komplexen Komposita des Deutschen wieder? Wie der Computer? Darüber hinaus werden allgemeinere Probleme der deutsch-slowakischen Maschinenübersetzung zu Bewusstsein gebracht und anhand zahlreicher authentischer Beispiele exemplifiziert. Dies betrifft u. a. Morphologie, Syntax, Lexik und Modus. Besonderes Augenmerk widmen wir der Frage, welche Kategorien für die Bewertung der Ãbersetzungen geeignet sind; Wenn im Slowakischen besondere Schwierigkeiten auftreten, drängt sich die Frage auf, ob bei der Evaluierung andere Kategorien als in anderen Sprachen anzuwenden sind.
