Stated first edition. 298 pages. Good condition. Binding is strong and corners are square. The cloth is overall toned, with spots f discoloration to the spine and… a faint coffee ring to the front cover, but free of rubbing or other wear. Pages are tight and clean. Previous owner's name stamped at the head of the front attached end paper, in red ink, along with the number "25" written in blue pencil. Pages are evenly toned throughout, but otherwise free of marks or writing. Some light scratches to the page edges at the head. Overall good condition. He is elected to represent his fellow miners at a union convention and there, under the influence of the eloquent older miner, John Siney, he becomes convinced of the need for a national miners' union.There are a series of strikes in the novel, the miners' desperate and pathetic attempts to better their conditions, and, more basically, their groping efforts to attain a life of dignity" (BLAKE, pp.145-146).
