As a member of the administrative elite, Tjondronegoro enjoyed a predominantly European education, connected to the colonial authority. Including his reports on four separate journeys made on Java, with the city of Salatiga in Central Java as the starting and ending point for each journey. In his four journeys, the writer visits almost all areas of Java, with the exception of the coastal area west of Batavia, modern-day Jakarta. - One of the few non-Western travelogues that offers a unique Javanese perspective on Dutch colonialism.
