Timothy Shay Arthur (18091885) was a popular 19th-century American writer, famous for his temperance novel Ten Nights in a Bar-Room and What I Saw There (1854). Written with compassion and sensitivity, Arthur's stories articulated the values and ideals associated with "respectable middle class" life in America.
