Contains a Preface, a dedication to Sir Walter Scott, 85 pages of letterpress describing the buildings and environs of Edinburgh, followed by 48 pages containing 101 fine steel engravings from drawings by Shepherd, usually two to a page, of the places described. BOUND WITH an unannounced gathering of 78 additional fine steel engravings of Scottish castles from other artists, interleaved with letterpress describing the titled owners and the location and design the buildings. These are apparently from "A sequel, intended to bind with this work, now publishing as Scotland Illustrated" referred to at the bottom of the List of Engravings. Together, 179 engravings giving a wonderful view of early 19th century Scotland. Bound in half green Morocco and green boards. Spine mellowed to brown; the title label is torn but complete, and the spine tips and corners are worn The binding is solid, and the contents are generally clean, with only light scattered foxing. A monumental review of a Scotland gone by.

Marbled endpapers, considerable foxing to frontispiece engraving and first title page with engraving of Sussex Place at Regent's Park; this title page appears to have suffered water damage and was re-backed with another sheet of paper by a binder, second title page undamaged. Illustrated green paper boards scuffed and soiled, but still presentable. Engraved title page moderately foxed, with off-setting to adjacent page. Normal age-related toning throughout text-block, with some instances of age-staining or finger-soiling. Off-setting exhibited on all tissue guards. Some tissue guards are scuffed at edges and corners. Binding is intact. Please see photos. James Elmes (1782-1862) was an English architect, civil engineer, and writer on the arts. Elmes was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, and, after studying building under his father, and architecture under George Gibson, became a student at the Royal Academy, where he gained the silver medal 1804. He designed a large number of buildings in London, and was surveyor and civil engineer to the Port of London, but is best known as a writer on the arts. In 1813-4, he restored the top part of the spire of Chichester Cathedral, reconstructing the pendulum device incorporated into it by Sir Christopher Wren to counteract the effects of strong winds.
