Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. In this pioneering essay, Thornley argues persuasively that (i) the pace of social change between 1922 and 1945 has been "both positively and negatively exaggerated"; (ii) 1948-1951 saw the frame of post-revolutionary society begin to crack; and (iii)the country has seen, since the 1st economic programme, the "stirrings of those political, economic and social changes which were held back by the civil war, Sinn Fein and by the unsophistication of our social philosophy". A light item. Postage will be reduced to 5 Euro at the time of dispatch. Card covers.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A scarce book in itself, particularly when inscribed to Sean Bourke in these terms- "Mountjoy Gaol, 2nd November 1968, to Sean Bourke, with very best wishes; may your books earn you more than this one did me! David Thornley, (after all, Butt sat for Limerick!)". Sean Burke masterminded the prison escape of the British spy, George Blake, in October 1966. Blake had been convicted in 1961 of spying for the Soviet Union. The escape was masterminded by Bourke, who originally approached Michael Randle only for financial help. Randle, however, became more involved and suggested they bring Pat Pottle in on the plan as well, for Pottle had originally suggested to Randle in 1962 when all three were prison friends of Blake, the idea of springing Blake. After the escape, Blake eventually made his way to Moscow; Bourke did too, but eventually returned to Ireland. This book was inscribed to Bourke whilst he was in Mountjoy Gaol awaiting extradition to England for trial. The Irish Supreme Court eventually rejected this request in 1973, ruling that Bourke's assistance in Blake's escape fell within the political offence exception to Ireland's extradition laws. A fascinating association copy. Inscribed by Author(s).
