The book presents the most up-to-date scientific concepts concerning the etiology and pathogenesis of blood retinal barrier breakdown such as tight junction associated protein dysfunction, and changes in fluid transport properties of the retinal pigment epithelium. The bulk of the book is clinically oriented and addresses novel imaging and diagnostic techniques for the detection of macular edema as well as the clinical context of a panoply of ocular diseases which induce macular edema, such as diabetes, other vasculopathies, uveitis, and many others. New light is shed on the association between highly active antiretroviral therapy and the induction of macular edema in HIV-positive patients. Wright and Buckingham's historical descriptions of various places in Belgium, the Rhine, Italy, Greece, and the Shores and Islands of the Mediterranean, with engraved illustrations by various artists. Complete with two volumes bound in one. Vol. I is complete with all 73 plates called for in the 'Contents,' though "Great Canal, and Antique Gothic House" [or "Ghent"] is bound in at Vol. II, p. 58, and "The City of Catania and Mount Etna" is bound in near Vol. II, p. 152. Vol. II is lacking pp. 25-32, and pp. 49-56, and also lacks the eight plates that would have been in those two signatures. This is quite possibly a binder's error, as there does not appear to be any explicit damage to the textblock at those locations; the binder also misplaces a number of plates, though most of these errors are simply a few pages off. Vol. I with all 73 plates. Vol. II with 73 of the 81 plates. Altogether with 146 of the 154 plates, which includes the frontispieces and additional title pages, engraved. Some foxing to the plates; previous owners' names on the front pastedown and recto of the initial frontispiece lacking front endpaper. Surface wear to the joints, spine, and corners of the boards. Vom November 1852 bis Ende 1853 stellte der Berner Lithograph und Pionierfotograf Carl Durheim (1810-1890) fotografische Porträts von in der Schweiz lebenden, aber nicht sesshaften und deshalb "heimatlosen" Menschen her. Diese standardisierten erkennungsdienstlichen Aufnahmen sollten die Zwangseinbürgerung, Zwangsassimilierung oder Zwangsausschaffung der betroffenen Bevölkerungsgruppen, zum Beispiel der Fahrenden, unterstützen helfen - Massnahmen, die 1850 vom jungen schweizerischen Bundesstaat in die Wege geleitet worden waren. Dieser einmalige Bestand an Salzpapierfotografien, der ethnologisch, staatspolitisch und fotografisch höchst interessant ist, lagert im Bundesarchiv der Eidgenossenschaft.
