Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book discusses the arguments for and against England's church rates, which were used for the upkeep and maintenance of church buildings. The author, who held political office at the time of the bookâs publication, argues the rates needed to be abolished and replaced with a more re…liable funding source and provides evidence for persistent problems with the collection and distribution of funds via the existing system. While recognizing that for some, the rates were a source of funding for the poor, the author stresses that his bill would extend and clarify rights for the poor, guaranteeing a portion of seats were reserved for them free of charge at all times. The author suggests that this is a more effective system for ensuring the poor have access to religious instruction. The author also discusses the issue within the broader context of religious peace, as well as the distribution of rights and responsibilities between the church and the government. The insights presented in this book demonstrate a deep understanding of the complexities within the issues surrounding funding for England's churches, as well as the political battles that arose during this time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketCloth. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. The Welsh landed interest was concerned with the way government institutions, taxation, administration and public expenditure affected the Principality. First ed, 1838, in modern green cloth, title in gilt. Spine, no title. Internally, new endpapers, [3], 4-51 pp. Has a line through 3…lines at rear, printed by J Limbird, light browning to tp and then page edges. A very nice copy of an uncommon title. Rice, Thomas Spring, first Baron Monteagle of Brandon, was a strong unionist and even went so far as to suggest in 1834, in a parliamentary speech which he later published, that Ireland be renamed West Britain (Brent, 51). See ODNB for a full Bio. Also the date 1838 is particularly significant as Wales was undergoing substantial administrative and political change following the 1830s reform era.

Add to basketAn interesting letter, casting light on the activities of trustees during the early days of the National Gallery. See the entries for Spring Rice and Baring in the Oxford DNB, as well as that for Sir Culling Eardley (1805-1863), 3rd Baronet. In good condition, lightly aged and folded twice, with slight traces of glue from mount…on reverse. Dated from 'The Uplands / East Sheen / Saturday'. 1p, 8vo. Eleven lines of text. 'Do look in at the British Gallery in Pall Mall to take another look at Culling Eardleys two Murillos which we visited together a few years back. I should not despair of obtaining them on reasonable terms & I think the purchase for our national Collection would not be a discreditable memorial of the present exhibition / All our Trustees will be in town & we [should easily have?] a good meeting'.
