Pagination as [frontis], [lacking title/copyright leaf i.e. pages i-ii], iii-xxvi, 27-419 pages. Hardcover: H 22.25cm x L 13.75cm. Original full leather binding; boards heavily scuffed with some staining, board corners bumped and worn, 2,25cm tear at heel of rear joint. Spine decorated with slightly raised bands but with muted and dulled gilt tooling to compartments, spine's title lettering also quite dulled but still legible, gilt tooled floral borders at board edges rubbed but still reasonably bright. Marbled endpapers; cloth page marker sewn into binding. Although the book lacks a title page and thus a publishers imprint too, the text and pagination match editions published in Philadelphia by J. Crissy in 1831 and 1835 or the J. Crissy and Thomas Desilver 1836 imprint. Text comprised of "A BIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL SKETCH OF THOMAS MOORE, ESQ. COMPRISING ANECDOTES OF ANCIENT MINSTRELSY, ILLUSTRATIVE OF THE "IRISH MELODIES" by J.W. Lake on pages ix-xxvi; LALLA ROOKH; AN ORIENTAL ROMANCE on pages 27-98; EPISTLES, ODES, AND OTHER POEMS on pages 99-153; INTERCEPTED LETTERS; OR, THE TWOPENNY POST BAG on pages 154-163; THE FUDGE FAMILY IN PARIS on pages 164-184; TOM CRIB'S MEMORIAL TO CONGRESS on pages 185-200; RHYMES ON THE ROAD, EXTRACTED FROM THE JOURNAL OF A TRAVELLING MEMBER OF THE POCOCURANTE SOCIETY, 1819 on pages 201-209; FABLES FOR THE **** ******** on pages 210-216; CORRUPTION AND INTOLERANCE; TWO POEMS on pages 217-227; THE SCEPTIC; A PHILOSOPHICAL SATIRE on pages 228-231; ODES OF ANACREON on pages 232-270; LITTLE'S POEMS on pages 271-294; THE LOVES OF THE ANGELS on pages 295-315; IRISH MELODIES on pages 316-350; NATIONAL AIRS on pages 351-360; SACRED SONGS on pages 361-369; BALLADS, SONGS, ETC. on pages 370-380; MISCELLANEOUS POEMS on pages 381-419. Antiquarian ink inscription - "Hill Waddell | Columbus" on front free endpaper; several pulled leaves and quires, mild moisture stains and nicks at fore-edges of several initial leaves, moderate to strong foxing and toning throughout, frontis has pencil notation with pencil mustache doodle drawn upon Thomas Moore portrait image, small patch of peeling on page 4, several creased page corners, occasional unobtrusive pencil marks amongst text, vertical crease near fore-edge of pages 351-352, several lines of pencil notes on rear flyleaf verso. Faded three-line pencil inscription upon front flyleaf: "Mary W. Brownrigg | Presentia [?] | By Jno. H. Brownrigg Oct. 1860." Columbus, Mississippi physician Jonathan Brownrigg (1829-1902), or John Brownrigg, enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in February 1861 but was eventually promoted within the CSA Medical Department to Chief Surgeon of the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana. Jonathan Brownrigg was one of seven children of General Richard Thomas Brownrigg (1793-1847) and his wife, Mary Winifred Hoskins Brownrigg. Presumably the book's inscribee, Mary W. Brownrigg, was the Doctor's mother although the lack of a maternal salutation opens the possibility that the book was for another relation - perhaps a sister. The Brownrigg family moved from Edenton, North Carolina to Columbus, Lowndes County, Mississippi in 1835 and established a 2000 acre cotton plantation and resided at their manor home Temple Heights which still stands today. General Brownrigg achieved local prominance as a city council member, a director of the Tombigbee Railroad and Banking Company and a co-founder of the Columbus Female Institute (now Mississippi University for Women). The Waddell surname on the aforementioned front free endpaper inscription is also a Brownrigg relation. A fair copy of a standard antiquarian edition of Moore's poetry.
