Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a historical debate on church governance during a pivotal period of religious and political transformation. Set against the backdrop of the Reformation and the rise of Presbyterianism, the author meticulously examines and refutes arguments supporting the divine right of episcopacy, a hierarchical system with bishops holding ultimate authority. The central theme revolves around the interpretation of biblical scripture and the nature of apostolic succession. The author contends that the roles of apostles and evangelists, as described in the New Testament, were temporary and specific to the early church's establishment. By dissecting the claims of proponents of episcopacy, the book sheds light on the historical evolution of church structures and challenges the notion of a divinely ordained model. Through rigorous analysis and compelling arguments, this book provides valuable insights into the complexities of church governance and its impact on religious and political landscapes. The author's exploration of scriptural interpretation and historical context ultimately underscores the importance of adapting church structures to evolving societal needs while upholding core principles of faith and community. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book systematically dismantles the arguments for Episcopalianism, particularly as it was (and is) practiced in Scotland. The author uses clear and accessible language to examine the arguments put forth by its proponents, demonstrating how they contradict scripture, history, and the very nature of the Christian church. The book provides a comprehensive historical examination of the development of the office of Bishop, tracing its origins to the apostolic era. The author shows how the claims of the Episcopalians that the office of Bishop is of divine origin and that it alone possesses the authority to ordain ministers are not supported by scripture. The author also examines the practical implications of Episcopalianism, arguing that it leads to an unbiblical concentration of power in the hands of the bishops and a de facto denial of the priesthood of all believers. The book concludes by presenting a compelling case for the biblical model of church government, in which all elders are equal in authority and share responsibility for the oversight of the church. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the history of the church and the biblical basis for church government. Hinges are intact with very small wear at rear hinge just starting. Over opened in at least one place. Offset affects pages opposite a number of the prints. Some browning and occasional bits of soiling. **This volume features contributions by significant women writers of the day. Five short stories are included from the Boston area-born abolitionist, journalist, novelist, women's and native American rights advocate, LYDIA MARIA CHILD (1802- 1880) including the first publication of "The Children of Mt. Ida." Based on elements of Greek myth, it is a tale of the ill-fated love of two foster children who grow up together in idyllic innocence on the Phrygian hills in the Aegean. Married, they remain unaware of a regal connection which will require an ultimate sacrifice. The Trojan Wars, the gods, and Helen of Troy, draw the hero away from his first love. Also interesting are the tones of mesmerism to be found in the story--then current in the works of Child's contemporary E.A. Poe, for instance--seen in the ritualized conjuring of a trance-like state in the heroine, enabling prophetic visions. This short story, as well as Child's "Elizabeth Wilson," The Youthful Emigrant," "A Legend of the Apostle John," "Hilda Silvering," "The Irish Heart," and "The Beloved Tune" appear here, and were then later published in book form: "Fact and Fiction: A Collection of Stories," (New York: C.S. Francis, 1846), BAL 3155. Interestingly, LMC dedicated that book to Anna Loring (1830-1896), a Beverly, Massachusetts woman and fellow abolitionist.**Boston poet FRANCES S. OSGOOD (1811-1850) is represented by five poems in Vol. III and at least three more in Vol. IV, including "The Sunbeam's Love," said to refer to her infatuation with the young fellow Bostonian author, Edgar Allan Poe. Poe penned poems in response, including "To F----s S. O---d," and another of 1846 entitled "To Her Whose Name Appears Below," featuring a cryptic anagram of Osgood's name spelled out in the text. These, however, did not appear in "The Columbian Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine." But Poe did contribute a short story, "Mesmeric Revelation" to "The Columbian" in 1844.**Other articles include a discussion of the work of poet Elizabeth Barrett (later Browning) by critic H.T. Tuckerman. Other notable contributions by women include Lydia H. Sigourney, Fanny Forrester and Maria Weston Chapman.**REF: On Poe and Mesmerism, see Poe Society, cf. "The Facts of the Case of M.
