Age wear includes exposed lower edges and corners; spine cocked forward; chipping on spine edges with a large chip near fore-edge on front board; rubbing on cover, with rippled creases in cloth cover from dampstains which have bled through to some interior pages (front and back pages); some other smudges on first few and last few pages. The last document of "the White Pilgrim," a famous Virginia preacher who, in his travels, wrote very influencial poetry, some of which is printed in this book. Born in North Carolina, he was one of the first famous poets from that state. 264 pages. Book.

Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society. Bound in original publisher's blindstamped brown cloth with bright gilt lettering and decorative design to spine, this antique volume is a scarce nineteenth-century theological work. The work is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and plate at the rear of volume showing author's grave. The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with clean pages. JOSEPH THOMAS was born near Hawfields (Trolling's bridge on Haw river) , in Orange (now Alamance) county, North Carolina, March 7, 1791, and died April 9, 1835. At the age of seven he was separated from his father and mother.In 1806, having gone to his home in North Carolina, he was deeply convicted of sin at a camp-meeting under the preaching of William Guirey. He began to pray in private, and after a year, at the age of sixteen, he received the evidence of a full pardon. .In 1811, having made a tour through the West, he returned by way of Philadelphia.In 1814, he sold his possessions, put off his [82] "fashionable clothing" and "dressed agreeably to the impressions" of his mind in white--whence his name the "White Pilgrim."
