Caroline, née d'Anspach, princesse de Galles, à sa fille Charlotte, première épouse du prince Léopold de Saxe-Cobourg (futur roi Léopold Ier de Belgique). L…'ouvrage provoqua un scandale à sa sortie anglaise comme lors de cette traduction française et rencontra des difficultés avec la censure. Seconde fille de Charles-Guillaume de Brünswick et de la princesse Augusta, soeur de Georges III d'Angleterre, Caroline avait été mariée, en 1795 au princes de Galles, le futur Georges IV. De cette union devait naître, l'année suivante, la princesse Charlotte, mais les deux époux se séparèrent d'un commun accord. La conduite de Caroline, après cette séparation allait donner lieu à des scandales, au point que la princesse, après s'être vu intenter un procès pour adultère, quitta l'Angleterre. L'accession au trône de Georges IV, en 1820, allait changer la donne. Le Roi lui offrit alors une rente annuelle de 50 000 livres à condition qu'elle renonce à son titre de reine et qu'elle ne foule plus le sol anglais mais Caroline refusa. Un second procès pour adultère s'ouvrit et elle parvint à gagner à sa cause l'opinion publique. (Gay, 125). Dos fendillés. Exemplaire très frais, grand de marges, entièrement non rogné, tel que paru.
