Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Large Size Book, 1st printing. In a chest of drawers left by his grandmother, author Randal Keynes found the writing case of Charles Darwin's beloved daughter Annie, who died at the age of ten. Within the box, among the typical keepsakes of a Victorian girlhood, were the n…otes Darwin kept as he cared for Annie through her final illness. For Keynes, a great-great-grandson of Darwin, Annie's writing case became the point of entry into the story of Darwin's family life and its influence on the development of his revolutionary understanding of man's place in nature. Keynes takes us into the family's private world and draws on a wealth of previously unseen material to show Darwin at home and trace his private struggle with his faith. Particularly fascinating is the revealing portrait of Emma, Darwin's wife- a complex woman, both tolerant and devout- who was in many ways ahead of her time. Emma and Charles were close and loving parents, and it was by observing his children that Darwin gleaned many of his insights into man's animal origins as he worked secretly on his theory of evolution. What emerges with fresh charity in these pages is the importance of Darwin's life with his family in his deepest thinking, and how his home was his most treasured laboratory- the place where his ground-breaking ideas were formulated, and could be tested, on his most precious subjects- his ten children. When Annie fell ill, Darwin was at her bedside day and night, doing all he could for her, making copious notes about her deteriorating health, bringing her "beautifully good" tea. Keynes shows how the pain of her loss cast a shadow over Darwin's thinking about the natural world and the struggle for life. Her death also inflamed the mental turmoil over religion and the existence of God that he had experienced since his return from the voyage of HMS Beagle. As Darwin's theories continue to shape much of our thinking about the roots of human nature, Darwin, His Daughter, and Human Evolution reveals the personal experience from which he drew his most deeply held ideas. Keynes's rare insight gives us a fuller picture of one of our most maverick thinkers we will never separate the scientist from his home and family again. eautifully good" tea. Keynes shows how the pain of her loss cast a shadow over Darwin's thinking about the natural world and the struggle for life. Her death also inflamed the mental turmoil over religion and the existence of God that he had experienced (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine sunned, corners very slightly bruised, slight lean. Not price clipped (£6.95), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ co…py for its age. 414pp. A saga of the Carlyon family, founders of Murranji Station in the Australian Outback. A sweeping novel of both the benefits and the harmful effects of the encroaching civilization they helped to establish in the wilderness. The pen name 'Maxwell Grant' was a pseudonym used by the authors of 'The Shadow' pulp magazine stories and for the novels they also wrote on the Australian outback. Street & Smith the publishers, asked Walter B. Gibson, a writer hired to chronicle the Shadow's adventures, to create a pen name for the Shadow's author for several reasons, primarily so that numerous authors could be used to write the stories without confusing the readers. Gibson, who was also a nonfiction writer, wanted to use a pen name for his fiction. He adopted the pen name Maxwell Grant, taking the name from two magic dealers he knew, Maxwell Holden and U.F. Grant. Quite a scarce book. Jacket by Neville Dear (illustrator).

In the aftermath of the 1798 Irish Rebellion, John Devereux Jr. of Shilbeggan, County Wexford, was tried at Cork for his alleged involvement in continued insurgent activity. Though the main uprising had been suppressed, pockets of resistance lingered, and Devereux was accused of participating in seditious g…atherings and fomenting rebellion against the Crown. His trial, held across December 1799 and January 1800, reflects the British authoritiesÃâÃâ¡Ãâ" determination to root out residual republicanism and assert control over a still-restive province. The proceedings offer a glimpse into the lingering embers of revolt and the punitive machinery deployed to extinguish them. 27 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery.
