Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Please see photos for condition details. Hardcover, red cloth boards show some spotting and soiling, with darkening to the edges. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. Both front and rear and pages do show foxing and spotting as does the exterior page edges. The text pages themselves are toned but foxing is much lighter, except for around the illustration pages - which also includes the title page because of the frontispiece. There are no signatures or bookplates, no library markings. The only evidence of handwriting found is at the top of the front end page, where there is very faint residue of perhaps an old store price that was once penciled there.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good-Very Good. None Stated. A 1926 memoir by the murderer of renowned architect Stanford White. After two sensationalized trials he was found not guilty by reason of insanity and sentenced to incarceration for life at the Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Fishkill, New York. In 1913 Thaw walked out of Matteawan and fled to Canada. He returned to the US and in December 1914 was extradited to New York. In a 1915 trial he was found no longer insane and set free. The 1926 memoir was intended to vindicate White's murder. Thaw never regretted what he had done. Twenty years after taking White's life, he said: "Under the same circumstances, I'd kill him tomorrow." Illustrated with numerous b&w photographs. It is married to a mid 1940s Argus/Abramson DJ. Some edge wear to the DJ with a number of small chips. Light soiling to the rear panel. Bright red boards with sharp black lettering. Overall a very good copy.…

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'The Traitor' is a compelling autobiographical account and personal defense written by Harry K. Thaw, a figure central to one of the most notorious scandals in American history. This work provides Thaw's own perspective on the events leading up to and following the 1906 killing of the prominent architect Stanford White at Madison Square Garden. Known as the 'Crime of the Century,' the event and the subsequent legal battles captivated the nation, and here Thaw offers his side of the narrative. The book delves into Thaw's relationship with his wife, Evelyn Nesbit, his perceived motivations of honor and protection, and his experiences within the American justice and mental health systems. Thaw reflects on the high-society dynamics of the Gilded Age, the intense media scrutiny of the era, and the legal strategies that eventually led to his acquittal by reason of insanity. As a primary source, 'The Traitor' serves as both a psychological self-portrait and a historical document that explores the intersection of wealth, obsession, and the law in the early 20th century. It is a vital read for those interested in true crime, legal history, and the social history of New York's elite. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: VG-. First Edition First Printing. Long-suppressed by the author's wealthy family, this is his own account of what led him to shoot the lover of his wife--glamorous model & showgirl Evelyn Nesbit--noted architect Stanford White (a playboy 3 times her age, whom it was suspected may have plied her with drugs & raped her), in front of horrified onlookers at the rooftop theater of Madison Square Garden in 1906. The crime rocked turn-of-the-century New York society & its scandalous nature reverberated for many years after Thaw's 2 trials, at the second of which he was found not guilty by reason of insanity & sent to an asylum, from which he escaped (with the help of his wealthy family) & was later deemed "cured."
