An einen namentlich nicht genannten "Freund": "Es wird, wie ich nun schon wiederholt vernehme, hier das Gerücht verbreitet, als hätte ich für das gegenwärtig in Ihrem Besitze befindliche Dürerportrait 2000 fl, nach anderer Version gar 6000 fl. geboten. Beides ist vollständig unwahr. Ich habe nie etwas geboten. Es war mein Schüler & Freund Dr. F. Haret [?], der auf der Durchreise nach Italien, wo er sich noch befindet, in Graz ganz auf eigene Faust - er ist Schüler - 2000 fl. bot und da er seine Aufenthalte in Italien nichts voraus wusste, gab er der Besitzerin auf, ein etwaiges Gegengebot an meine Adresse gelangen zu lassen. Dies der wahre Sachverhalt - da ich nicht möchte, dass mein Name in der Sache eitel genannt werde. Ich behalte mir vor, bei der nächsten mir passenden Veranlassung mich über das Bild, wie über das mir gar nicht zweifelhafte Verhältnisse desselben zu dem wieder aufgefundenen Leipziger öffentlich auszusprechen. Inzwischen aber ist niemand autorisiert, meine Meinung in der Sache zu kennen oder zu interpretieren []". - Thausing war seit 1862 Bibliotheksbeamter an der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste und von 1865 bis 1868 Dozent für allgemeine Welt- und Kulturgeschichte. Seit 1864 an der Albertina tätig, wurde er 1876 deren Direktor. 1873 folgte Thausing einem Ruf auf den Lehrstuhl für Neuere Kunstgeschichte in Wien, war seit 1879 Ordinarius und ging 1883 als zeitweiliger Leiter des Istituto Austriaco di Studii Storici nach Rom.

Thausing schreibt über Dürers "Selbstbildnis mit Eryngium" von 1493: "[] Goethe, der dieses Portrait noch sehen konnte in der Sammlung des Hofraths Beireis in Helmstedt gibt davon folgende Beschreibung: Ich beobachtete als im höchsten Grade kostbar das Portrait Alb. Dürer's von ihm selbst gemalt und datiert 1493. Dürer war daher damals in seinem 22ten Jahre. Das Portrait ist halb lebensgroße Büste, an der man die beiden Hände und Vorderarme sieht. Kleine purpurrothe Mütze mit kurzen, dünnen Schnüren, der Hals bis unter den Schlüsselbeinen entblößt []. Dieses Portrait, damals (1805) schon schadhaft, ist seitdem von dem großen Pergamentbogen, auf dem es gemalt war losgelöst auf Leinwand übertragen und vollständig restauriert worden []". - Thausing war seit 1862 Bibliotheksbeamter an der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste und von 1865 bis 1868 Dozent für allgemeine Welt- und Kulturgeschichte.
