Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. "The Critic" was, as it states on its cover : "An Illustrated Monthly Review of Literature, Art, and Life". This is the February 1899 issue, being Vol. XXXIV (Old Series), No. 860. Lots of pictures of great (and also mostly forgotten) authors and celebrities. "The Critic" was published by G. P. Putnam's Sons. Partial Contents: * Medallion Frieze by Augustus St. Gaudens portraying William Dean Howells and his daughter Mildred Howells * The Lounger --- with numerous photographs and pictures and bits of gossip and goings-on of various authors, artists and celebrities, as well as various things that were happening. Very Interesting. A piece by J. M. Whistler appears- this opposite a piece on M. Maurice Maeterlinck (who looks very stylish. ) John Muir sat still long enough for a nice photo portrait to be taken. There is a handsome Vanity Fair 'Spy' portrait of William Black, Scottish novelist, who had just died. Agnes Repplier provides a study of Black's novels (see below). There is a nice photo of the front cover of W. E. Henley's "Five Songs from a Book of Verses". The cover was designed by John Singer Sargent. At the caption for a Bust of Christ, then newly re-discovered - is a small penciled X. There is an interesting discussion of a new type of binding in which Mr. Cobden-Sanderson is mentioned . and also Miss Evelyn Nordhoff and May Morris are mentioned. Too bad there are no pictures in that article. There is much more of interest in the section called "The Lounger" *Maurice Boutet De Monvel (The French Artist) --- By Thomas Bentzon * The Creator of Wonderland (Lewis Carroll) --- by J. L. G. * The Novels of William Black --- by Agnes Repplier * Thackeray at Charterhouse ( with illustrations by Thackeray and commentary by - I presume - himself * A New Life of Shakespeare --- by W. J. Rolfe There is lots more, including a sizable number of Book Reviews. I am sure you will recognize some of the books reviewed. TITLE : The Critic (An Illustrated Monthly Review of Literature, Art, and Life) ISSUE : Vol. XXXIV , No. 860 DATE : February 1899 EDITORS : Joseph B. Gilder and Jeanette L. Gilder AUTHORS : Agnes Repplier, W. J. Rolfe, et al IMPRINT : Published by G. P. Putnam's Sons for The Critic Co. PLACE : New York, New Rochelle, London DETAILS : Monthly periodical; approx. 6 3/4" x 9 3/4", printed wraps (soft, and now brittle paper), glued and stapled; xxiv (front & rear material) + Table of Contents + frontispiece + pp 99 - 192 (94 pages); contains numerous illustrations, many of them photographs (black-and-white). Printed on mildly calendered paper. Rough-cut fore- and bottom - edges. Back cover has advertising. CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS ONLY -- This is a previously owned periodical that remains clean and presentable , with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR -- Splitting to spine extremities; weathering to front cover along spine and top edge; weathering and a small spot (or stain) to rear cover, else clean; extended edges have tear and loss , which is typical of such covers- its nigh on impossible to handle such without cause a bit more obvious 'usage'. BINDING -- There is evidence of neatly effected mending to spine and covers attachment. Else the binding is solid. There are no detached or loose leaves. Interior -- I saw one small penciled x, else the interior is clean and presentable. M Boutet de Monvel, Thackeray (Sketches) (illustrator).
