A post-war collection of Bonnard's unpublished work over the previous 15 years, including landscape paintings and pastel drawings in colour and many of his characteristic nu…de sketches. The front panel of the jacket illustration (The Sun) is an original lithograph by Bonnard made especially for this issue of Verve. This is largely complete (just a small loss at the spine and at the bottom corner), but the remainder of the jacket is missing. The card covers are securely attached, but the backstrip is also lost. Internally the pages are clean and unmarked and the colour illustrations are bright with no trace of foxing. The French text is confined to a brief introduction and captions to the illustrations based on Bonnard's contemporary notes. Photos by Brassai. A piece of Art History at a realistic price. Introductory essay by Malo, translated into English by Robert Sage. With very richly colored plates r…eproducing the entirety of the astrological calendar of the Tres Riches Heured du Duc de Berry. DJ spine faded, original covers exceedingly clean and sharp, text entirely crisp and bright. Now covered in our thick mylar jacket. 'Teriade had always found room for selections from French illuminated manuscripts in Verve's early 'miscellaneous or general issues.' With Verve No. 7, this predilection was in full flood. The Calendar from Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry inaugurated a series devoted exclusively to illuminated texts from the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries. Verve Nos. 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14/15, 16, and 23--which spanned a nine-year period--attest to the importance Teriade attached to this art form.' (Michel Antonioz, VERVE: The Ultimate Review of Art and Literature, 121). In an introductory essay, Teriade himself relays the great difficulty in attempting to reproduce the paintings: 'There are no more exquisite paintings in the world than those contained in this manuscript, and their colors are so delicate that faithful reproduction seemed mpossible by means of mechanical processes using chemical tones . The purit of the manuscript's colors, as Robert Draeger discovered, defied the sensitive emulsions of photographic plates. Only after patient effort could the minute drawing and transparent colors be reconstituted. The result achieved demanded extraordinary crafstmanship, and may well mark a date in the history of colored reproduction. For the first time, the Calendar of Les Tres Riches Heures now belongs to the public in its entegrality and in the exact dimensions of its original paintings.' Each of the calendar months depict in great detail a scene from the agricultural life of 15th century France-- 'No document exists which shows more fully and accurately the life of Medieval France: in it are expressed the elegance, the refinement, and the vigor of the France of the past.'.

Verve double issue devoted to Picasso's lithogra…phs, etchings, and paintings which he made specifically for his Grimaldi Chateau, just purchased while in the Golfe-Juan on the French Riviera with (another) young lover, Francoise Gilot, muse for most of the work here. With lithographic cover and dust jacket, both designed by Picasso expressly for this issue. The manilla DJ is fairly scarce and here has kept the book itself extremely clean and sharp. Now covered in our thick mylar jacket. ?In September, October and November he turned out a prodigious amount of work, often using boat paint and plywood or fibro-cement because supplies were short and he thought they would better withstand the ch?teau?s damp. The centerpiece was the enchanting ?Joie de vivre? or ?Antipolis? with a dancing Gilot in the center, surrounded by frolicking satyrs and fauns? Picasso was recalling an antique past and Antipolis, the ancient Greek name of Antibes? (New York Times).

The dust jacket was often treated as a throwaway, especially since it was taped over, making it impossible to see the beautiful Matisse covers without tearing it; they are quite uncommonly seen. We have not attempted removing the dust jacket here, though we have supplied a photograph from another copy showing the design. This is a unique opportunity to for a collector to have not only a copy of the book *as issued* with the jacket, but a uniquely clean and fresh copy of the cover itself, entombed within the protection of the jacket. The book itself is exceedingly clean and sharp. Illustrated throughout in color and black and white with contributions from Verve's usual suspects: Matisse, Miro, Picasso, Rouault, Braque, and a spectacular center-fold lithograph by Pierre Bonnard. In spite of the statement in the 'Occupation notice that half the American edition was lost, this is not a terribly scarce book -- perhaps because subscribers immediately recognized the significance of what it represented, namely the destruction of the thriving modern art movement in France at the hands of the neo-classical obsessed Nazis. But the jacket and condition make this an uncommon survival.

Beginning with a stunning cover produced by Matisse for the first issue, Verve would incorporate fresh artwork into its cover designed, newly commissioned by artists such as Miro, Picasso, Chagall, and other lead…ing lights of the French art world. Each issue offered spectacular color lithographs printed by the Paris lithographers, Mourlot. Early issues came in litho-printed card wrappers in boxes, later volumes would be in paper-over board with litho covers. This choce allowed Teriade to feature the fresh lithographic artwork in the cover design, but left the books themselves extremely fragile and succeptible to wear. Additionally, the full-page lithographs have been continuous targets for art dealers looking to excise the plates. So condition seen here is quite rare, with each volume preserved COMPLETE + FINE with no signs of the wear and toning so commonly seen. 'The cover of Verve No. 1 is by Henri Matisse; it consists of three unmodulated colors--red, blue, and black--that the master cut directly from printers' ink specimen books. . Mattisse's cover for the first issue, lithographed by Fernand Mourlot printers, was an original work of art created expressly for the magazine--as would be practically all of the Verve's covers. . The painter took great pains to make sure that the cover would turn out exactly as he wished. . THe care Matisse lavished on what others might consider a minor undertaking was one of the hallmarks of Teriade's publications. How did he induce the greatest artists of this century to give the very best of themelves? . Matisse and Teriade shared a common ideal. For both of them, painting was life itself.' Tall 4to, 35.5cm. Covers torn along front hinge about 3', dj torn 5' at the same, small puncture 2/3 up the spine. Internal contents exceedingly clean and sharp. Matisse's pochoir study of The Fall of Icarus was his first of two, the latter appearing in Jazz, published in 1945 by Teriade. Created in 1943 with Nazi troops occupying the streets outside his apartment in Paris, it has been suggested that they were the referent for his falling image. 'In the final decades of his life, Matisse invented a new form of art, the cut-out. Working with scissors and sheets of gouache-painted paper, he cut various shapes?from the organic to the geometric?and arranged them into lively compositions. Cut-outs formed the prototypes for the printed images . which Matisse insisted remain absolutely faithful to the original colors. In response, the publisher [Teriade] turned to pochoir, a stencil printing technique in which the same gouaches could be used.' (MOMA).

Contents complete with lithographic frontispiece. Very small stain to the head of spine and top gutter of the FFEP, else FINE, exceedingly clean and sharp with very bright lithographic covers; Manilla wrappers show some light toning to the spine and trivial rubbing to the tips.
