Add to basketFull calf. Condition: Very Good. First edition. A significant publication that created an immediate and great sensation. Modern historians generally regard it as propaganda than a true historical accounting. At the time, though, the statements of Sir John Temple were received with unquestioning confidence, as the work of a professed eye-witness who could speak with authority, and did much to inflame popular indignation in Britain against the Irish with his account of atrocities committed against Protestant subjects in Ireland. The work was highly influential and divisive. Temple's Irish Rebellion was often praised by authors hostile to Roman Catholicism, including John Milton and Voltaire. The Irish were so incensed against the book that one of the first resolutions of the Patriot Parliament of 1689 was to order it to be burnt by the common hangman. Condition: Very Good. Complete. BOOK INFO Full Title: The Irish rebellion: or, An history of the beginnings and first progresse of the general rebellion raised within the kingdom of Ireland, upon the three and twentieth day of October, in the year, 1641. Together vvith the barbarous cruelties and bloody massacres which ensued thereupon. By Sir Iohn Temple Knight. Master of the Rolles, and one of his Majesties most honourable Privie Councell within the kingdom of Ireland Printed in 1646 by R. White for the publisher Samuel Gellibrand in London. First edition, first printing. Bound in contemporary full mottled calf boards; rebacked in modern calf with original gilt-lettered morocco spine label laid down. Small quarto, 8" x 6". Collated and complete: [xvi] 136, 55 pp., [1] blank.Title in double rule box; woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorated initials. CONDITION REPORT The book is in VERY GOOD condition. Exterior and binding: firm binding, front hinge starting. Rebacked spine. Rubbed boards and extremities. Worn boards and corners, some chipping to leather. Darkened. Chipped spine label. Interior: Grubby first few pages. Light toning, waviness to pages. Leaf 95-96 with a rust hole affecting a few letters of text. Clean overall with light signs of handling - some creasing, thumbing or odd smudge or spot. ABOUT THE IRISH REBELLION The Irish Rebellion of 1641 began on October 23, 1641. Initiated by Catholic gentry and military officers, demands included an end to religious discrimination, greater Irish self-governance, and return of confiscated Catholic lands. Planned as a swift coup d'état to gain control of the Protestant-dominated central government, instead it led to the 1641?1653 Irish Confederate Wars, part of the wider Wars of the Three Kingdoms. For the next ten years, the Confederacy fought a four-sided war against Irish Royalists, Scottish Covenanters and English Parliamentarians. After a pause due to the English Civil War, the rebelswere finally defeated by the English Parliament's New Model Army from 1649 through to 1653 and land ownership in Ireland passed largely to Protestant settlers. .…
