Merzbacher, Dr. L., Rabbi of Temple Eman-El" revised the Order of Prayer in 1855. The 3rd edition was revised and corrected by Dr. S. Adler in 1864. But th…is copy was published in 1879 by John Medole & Son, Book and Job printers, 73 to 79 Fulton Street. New York, New York. Title page on left side of book:] Hymns, for Divine service in The Temple Emanu-El, copyrighted in 1871. Very attractive leather binding with gilt embossed boards depicting synagogues. All edges gilt. Page iii/iv (2nd leaf), which is the first leaf of the preface of the Order of Service, is lacking its bottom half. Scotch tape remainders on title page edge. A blank preceding the title pages on left and right side of the book are lacking. Apparently not in Singerman. Not in Goldman. Not not in the OCLC. The last page of the Hymns, on the left side of the book state, among other things, that Hymn 33 is by the late Dr. M. Mayer, some hymns are by Felix Adler, and the rest are by James K. Gutheim. Leon Merzbacher (1809-1856) received his Rabbinic ordination from the celebrated R. Moses Sofer of Pressburg (the "Chatam Sofer"), the leading opponent of the Reform movement. Merzbacher immigrated to America in the 1840's and was appointed the first rabbi of Temple Emanuel in New York where he served until his death. He adopted changes in synagogue custom such as the prominent use of the an organ and eradicating the observance of the second day of festival. Samuel Adler (1809-1891) replaced Merzbacher in Temple Emanuel in 1857, following the latter's death, where he served until 1891. Adler's son, Flex, was the founder of the Ethical Culture movement.
