The series features Maxie, a young girl who is sent to live with a series of uncles in faraway places after her own parents go missing in a shipwreck off the coast of Australia. Her "tremendously thrilling adventures & stirring deeds" gained her a loyal following among young readers in the early 20th century. In 207 pages + 5 pages of ads for other girls series in rear, with glossy frontispiece & DJ cover art by Russell Tandy, who would become more famous for his illustrations in the Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys series. An early if not first printing of this 1932 FIRST EDITION from Cupples & Leon (listing to Book #3 in both front matter & on front DJ flap), this 12mo has olive green cloth over boards stamped in dark blue lettering & design (Maxie holding her hat) to front & spine. Condition is Good+: generally very clean with light exterior soil/spotting, binding strong & straight, both hinges secure. Pages modestly tanned, heavier around edges, but unmarked save for former owner's name & address to the"This is My Book" box on ffep & gift inscription opposite. Carolyn Keene was the pen name used by the several authors who wrote the Nancy Drew series books, the best of whom was Mildred Wirt Benson, who wrote the original story *and* the introduction for this facsimile edition 64 years after this title's first appearance. The book's Fine condition dust jacket covers a beautiful blue cloth hardcover with orange lettering and Nancy Drew in silhouette. This facsimile edition looks like the original, but is constructed better and is printed on better quality paper. It also includes four black and white full-page glossy prints before the title page. This edition's $12.95 price is shown on the front flap.
