Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the proposal for a League of Nations â" an international organization dedicated to maintaining global peace and security. Amidst the aftermath of World War I, the author presents compelling arguments for the League's mission of conflict resolution through arbitration, diplomacy, and collective action. The book examines the historical context that led to the League's conception. It analyzes the provisions outlined in the League's Covenant, addressing concerns and objections raised during the ratification process. The author clarifies the distinction between delegated and automatic forms of the League, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each model. Furthermore, the book explores the implications of the League's proposed structure, including its organs, their functions, and the distribution of power among member states. The author emphasizes that the League's success hinges on the willingness of nations to set aside their differences and work collectively to preserve peace, underscoring the critical role of international cooperation in preventing future conflicts. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of The Covenanter: An American Exposition of the Covenant of the League of Nations, published by Doubleday, Page & Company in 1919. Written by former President William Howard Taft, George W. Wickersham, A. Lawrence Lowell, and Henry W. Taft. Contemporary bibliographic and dealer records identify this 1919 Doubleday issue as the first edition. With a tipped-in presentation inscription signed by William Howard Taft, dated May 16th, 1919, with the location noted as Hotel Belmont. The inscribed leaf has been incorporated very neatly and almost seamlessly, and at first glance appears integral to the book. The inscription reads, to the best of our ability to decipher it: "For Herbert [surname unclear] / with best wishes of / Wm H Taft / May 16th 1919 / Hotel Belmont." The inscription is contemporary with the publication of the book and dates from the period when Taft was actively involved in the national debate over the proposed League of Nations. The book itself was issued specifically to explain and advocate an understanding of the League covenant; contemporary publishing reports noted that advance copies were distributed to members of Congress in 1919. Publisher's original dark blue cloth binding with gilt lettering and ruling. Original 1919 dust jacket is present, an uncommon survival for this title. The rear/flap advertising includes Ambassador Morgenthau's Story at the original $2.00 price. A notable signed association-era copy of an important work from Taft's post-presidential career, particularly desirable with its original dust jacket. Condition: Very Good book in Good to Very Good original dust jacket. Book appears sound and well preserved overall, with normal age-related wear and toning. Interior is generally clean. The William Howard Taft presentation inscription is on a tipped-in leaf that has been mounted with unusual care and is nearly seamless in appearance. Original dust jacket shows overall age toning, rubbing, light soiling, edge wear, several small closed tears/nicks, and minor losses at the extremities. Jacket remains substantially complete and highly presentable for a 1919 example and is now protected in a clear removable cover. No attempt has been made to conceal the jacket's age-related wear. Please review all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. Inscribed by Author(s). …
