Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book gathers texts by medieval English chronicler Symeon of Durham, whose writings chronicled significant events and personalities from the end of the Dark Ages through the Norman Conquest and beyond. Symeon himself was not only a prior and precentor, but also a contemporary witne…ss to many of these events and his work relies heavily on local and regional sources (including the now largely lost works of earlier Northumbrian writers) that have long since been lost. As a result, Symeon's writings are an important primary source for the history of the region during one of its most transformative eras, and this book provides a valuable resource for scholars specializing in medieval history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Little is known about the life of Symeon of Durham (fl. c.1090-c.1128), other than that he was one of the monks present at the translation of the remains of Saint Cuthbert in 1104. His eyewitness account of the opening of Cuthbert's coffin is just…one of his writings included in this first volume of his complete works, published for the Rolls Series in 1882. The main Latin text here is his history of the church of Durham up to the year 1096, which draws on Northumbrian annals and provides much valuable information not found elsewhere. Supplemental to this are chapters relating to the see of Durham and the miracles of Cuthbert. The appendices comprise a poem by Adelwulf on the abbots of his monastery, and the lives of Bartholomew the Anchorite and Saint Oswald. Thomas Arnold (1823-1900) provides an extensive introduction as well as English side-notes to the Latin texts.

This second volume of his complete works, published in 1885, was ed…ited by Thomas Arnold (1823-1900) with an introduction and English side-notes. The main Latin text here is Symeon's history of the kings of Britain, which was intended as a continuation of Bede's history from the year 731 up to the writer's own day. Much of the early narrative is taken from local Durham annals, and later sections are borrowed from the chronicle of John of Worcester, but from 1119 to 1129 Symeon is an independent and unique authority. John of Hexham's continuation of the history, up to 1153, is also included, in addition to appendices on the genealogies of the Anglo-Saxon kings, a glossary and an index to both volumes.

Hardback. Condition: New. The church of Durham, founded in 995, claimed in the Middle Ages to be in origin the church of Lindisfarne or Holy Island, the members of which had fled in the face of Viking raids and had wandered for long across northern England, before re-establishing their church at Chester-le-Street in Co. Durham a…nd then at Durham itself. The text edited and translated here for the first time for over a century is the most complete and detailed account of the history of that church. Important as a piece of early post-Conquest historiography by an author about whom much is now known, the text is fascinating for the details it gives about the ecclesiastical community of Durham, the miracles which its members believed had occurred, and the place of the church of Durham in relation to the lands and secular inhabitants of northern England.
