Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 1. Washington Square Press Printing,1985. 270 pp. From AudioFile Tom Crick, narrator of this fictional autobiography, has just been sacked from a thirty-year teaching career. Waterland, his final lecture to a class of prep school boys, covers his own history, as well as that of the Fens of England. Christian Rodska's portrayal of Crick captures the fine nuances of British irony, bitterness and humor so richly layered throughout the story. His accounts of empire-building are no less fascinating than the entire cassette devoted to the reproductive lives of European eels, and their role in the reproductive lives of certain of the book's characters. Rodska washes the story with an overwhelming sense of melancholy, entirely fitting to Swift's plot. R.P.L. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Review "Perfectly controlled, superbly written -- Waterland is original, compelling and narration of the highest order." -- The Guardian (U.K.) "Swift spins a tale of empire-building, land reclamation, brewers and sluice-minders, bewhiskered Victorian patriarchs, insane and visionary relicts. I can't remember when I read a book of such strange, insidious, unsettling power with a more startling cast of characters." -- Books and Bookmen (U.K.) "Teems with energy, fertility, violence, madness -- demonstrates the irrepressible, wide-ranging talent of this young British writer." -- Washington Post Book World "A formidably intelligent book -- animated by an impressive, angry pity at what human creatures are capable of doing to one another in the name of love and need. The most powerful novel I have read for some time." -- The New York Review of Books "Waterland appropriates the Fens as Moby Dick did whaling or Wuthering Heights the moors -- a beautiful, serious, and intelligent novel, admirably ambitious and original." -- The Observer (U.K.) "Rich, ingenious, inspired." -- The New York Times. A very clean copy. No markings on pages. Binding is solid and intact. Very little shelfwear. …

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. 5 3/4" x 9." Twenty-six pages, complete. Pages are clean and intact overall except for light age toning, several annotations on front cover (first page), one small annotation on the page following, 1901 stamp of the American Society on front, and a chip measuring 1" x 1" in lower-left corner on front (not affecting text). Text is still very readable (annotations mostly on the front). A Very Good copy. This is the thirteenth annual report of the directors of the Fitchburg Railroad Company to the corporation's stockholders. The directors were Thomas Whittemore, John J. Swift, Alvah Crocker, and Winthrop E. Faulkner. Many aspects of the business are addressed in the report including, but not limited to, transfer of stocks, ongoing lawsuits, the increase of train engines and cars and how it relates to an "embarrassment" wherein the rails got backlogged by too many cars, a similar "embarrassment" in Charlestown where cars could not be unloaded for "want of depot accommodations," plans for road repairs at Fitchburg and other locations, introduction of water and gas at Charlestown, recommended raising of rates for passenger traffic and transporting freight (the directors put much emphasis on increasing rates), contentions with the Lexington and West Cambridge Railroad who accused Fitchburg of overcharging them for extra services, correcting a Construction account in Fitchburg's account books so as to not commit fraud (misclassifying expenses under the Construction account), locomotive repairs, earnings of the company, expenses and debts of the company, and the reasons for withholding dividends (the directors say dividends have been withheld from stockholders for the first time because they want to prioritize paying off debt and to accommodate the increased expenses over the past year). The Fitchburg Railroad operated from 1840-1919. Its main branch ran between Boston and Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The railroad later serviced areas in Vermont and New York.…
