Oblong 4to. 10 x 7 in. 47, [1] pp. With photo plates, text illustrations, 1 large folding map. Textured beige softcovers, raised embossed copper decorative lettering front cover, yapp fore-edges (slight toning, minor shelfwear), still a VG bright copy. First edition of this exceedingly rare mining investment prospectus issued following World War I by The Western Smelting & Power Company to raise money to build their two-part aerial tramway system to connect the Homestake and Gold Dust mines to the Company's copper smelter just completed in 1921. The WS&P Co. had already built a 350 kilowatt hydro-electric power plant near the 53 foot "Big Fall" waterfall on the Clark's Fork River, which featured a quarter mile wooden flume to carry water to the plant, and in fact the flume required so much lumber, they had also constructed a sawmill producing 800,000 board feet of timber. When completed the tram operated at a speed of 12 mph and was capable of delivering 250 tons of ore to their smelter every six hours. Although the tram was completed four years later, there is no evidence either the smelter or tram was in operation by 1926, and the company never reached commercial production. By late 1926, the Gold Dust Adit had reached 2100 and had not tapped the Homestake's ore body, and in 1929, the WS&P Co. had failed to stockpile any ore. Eventually the smelter was converted to 1000-ton flotation plant, and destroyed by fire in 1988. The Map depicts "Claims surveyed for patent and principal locations, New World (unor) Mining District, Park County, MT. Tanzer (1863-1927) had originally organized the New World Mining & Development Co. in Cooke City, MT in 1904, and after beginning initial construction, and with additional investors, it became the Western Smelting & Power Co. He was an inveterate developer and promoter of Cooke City, MT mining interests. No copies in Worldcat; See: Chapter 4. The Western Power and Smelting Aerial Tram System (24PA879), US Forest Service (2024), pp. 4-1 thru 4-32 (with photos); Historical Note - Week of March 8th, Cooke City Mining Man Dies in Germany, Cooke City Montana Museum (2023).…

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Baltimore, tall octavo (10 by 7 inches), variously paged, hundreds of plates and text figures. ***CONTENT: The small State of Maryland is nonetheless noteworthy for its diversity of landscapes: from west to east, the folded Appalachians, the Piedmont Plateau, and the broad Coastal Plain. These volumes document the 19th century history of geological investigations, the physical features and geomorphology of the State, its geological formations, mineral resources, and paleontology. Maryland rock formations range in age from Precambrian to Pleistocene, and produce a noteworthy assortment and diversity of fossils: stromatolites, sponges, corals, trilobites and other arthropods, crinoids, brachiopods, mollusks, fishes, dinosaur remains, shark teeth, whale bones, mammoth and mastodon skeletons, and more. Volumes in this set include: VOLUME ONE (1897), with 539 p. and 17 plates; CAMBRIAN-ORDOVICIAN (1919), with 424 p. and 58 plates; SILURIAN (1923), with 794 p. and 67 plates; DEVONIAN (IN THREE VOLUMES) (1913), with 1436 p. and 171 plates; LOWER CRETACEOUS (1911), with 622 p. and 97 plates; UPPER CRETACEOUS (IN TWO VOLUMES) (1916), with 1022 p. and 90 plates; EOCENE (1901), with 331 p. and 64 plates; MIOCENE (IN TWO VOLUMES) (1904), with 670 p. and 135 plates; and PLIOCENE AND PLEISTOCENE (1906), with 292 p. and 75 plates. The authors that made contributions to these volumes reads like a list of early 20th century "who's who" of the country's most notable geologists and paleontologists. ***CONDITION: These volumes are in VERY GOOD+ TO FINE condition, uniformly bound in the original ribbed green cloth, with gilt lettering on the front covers and backstrips. The covers are well preserved, with only a trace of rubbing to the extremities. All outer joints are solid, as are most inner hinges; the bindings are firm. The text pages and illustrations are near pristine: fresh, clean and bright, with no foxing or dampstains. Most volumes are NOT ex-library, but have former owner's signatures on the front endpapers. Four volumes are signed by Marshall Kay (1904-1975), the celebrated Columbia University geologist. Save for one volume, no external ownership markings. This is a very handsome set of highly informative, profusely illustrated volumes. Domestic and international shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.…
