Amerikanischer Maler schottischer Abstammung (1930-2000), der 1936 nach Schottland zurückkehrte und am Dundee College of Art studierte. Später lebte er einige Jahre in Italien und der Schweiz und dann abwechselnd in Schottland und Deutschland, wo er 2000 an den Folgen eines Verkehrsunfalls starb. Sein deutsches Atelier in Bonn war übrigens in Räumen einer Firma für Laborgeräte, deren Betreiber Enkel August Mackes waren und lag unmittelbar neben Macke ehemaligem Wohnhaus. Swan wurde besonders für seine dreidimensionale "Objekt-Malerei" bekannt. Sprache: de.

Douglas Litterick Swan nasce a New Britain, nel Connecticut, ma all'età di sei anni si trasferisce in Scozia. Swan studia al Dundee College of Art (1943-53) e inizia a esporre alla Royal Scottish Academy. Nel 1954, ottiene una borsa di studio per studiare a Londra. È lì che incontra l'artista William Scott (1913-89), con il quale stringe un legame duraturo: i due dipingono insieme nel Somerset e in Cornovaglia. Nel 1957/8 Swan ottiene una borsa di studio del British Council per studiare in Italia, dove, a Milano, poté godere della vivace scena artistica contemporanea della città, grazie a figure come Lucio Fontana, Enrico Castellani e Roberto Crippa.Alla fine degli anni Sessanta Swan si trasferisce in Svizzera e si afferma come importante pittore astratto. Dopo la sua prima mostra a Bochum, si stabilisce stabilmente in Germania con sua moglie. Nel 1986 gli è stato assegnato l'importante premio annuale d'arte della città di Bonn (Kunststipendium des Stadt).  Nel corso della sua carriera, Swan ha esposto alla Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art di Edimburgo, alla Young Contemporaries, alla Whitechapel Art Gallery, al London Group, all'Artists International Association, alla Stone Gallery (nota per il suo legame con LS Lowry), alla Waddington Gallery, alla Gimpel Fils Gallery e ha tenuto una serie di mostre personali in Italia, Belgio, Germania e Svizzera.
