Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book narrates the adventures of the author, a Victorian-era clergyman's wife, and her family as they embark on a voyage to the Holy Land. The narrative provides unique insights into the historical, social, and religious complexities of the Middle East, making it an invaluable hist…orical document for travel enthusiasts and historians. As Christians, their motivations were partly religious but also stem from a fascination with the classical world and adventure. The author's sharp, witty, and evocative observations detail their journey from Cairo to the Holy Land and include stops at famous historical sites like the Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Suez Canal. Their experiences highlight the cultural contrasts between Victorian England and the mysterious East, bringing to life the sights, sounds, and smells of a bygone era, and shedding light on the turbulent socio-political dynamics between East and West. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. A travelogue of a family trip in the late 19th century to the East, especially those parts connected with biblical history, by the founder of the Mothers' Union - edited by The Rev. George Henry Sumner (husband). On the whole, the external and internal condition is sound. The maroon cloth covered boar…ds are quite faded and rubbed in places with a label shadow on the upper one. Likewise, the gold gilt vignette (Arab and Dromedary) is also slightly faded (main image). Condition (internal): the pages are generally mildly tanned throughout with occasional foxing. Tanning is slightly more apparent on the preliminary pages and on the frontispiece's tissue guard. The upper and lower board joints with the book block are a little loose - with a little of the mull exposed (see image of rear endpaper/board). pp. vi, 342, followed by an appendix (kit needed -image), and 16 pages of the publisher's inventory. 8vo. Black endpapers. Please note that, depending on destination, we may request a payment to cover any extra shipping & postage charges. Proceeds to Amnesty International. Abe2546.
