Gerstaecker worked a number of odd jobs as a young adult before he found a successful career as a travel writer. He became well-known for his writings that documented his travels around the world including his journeys to the United States, the American West, South America, Mexico, the West Indies, Hawai'i, Polynesia, and Australia. This particular book documents his travels in California and Honolulu, Hawai'i. He provides many detailed observations and impressions of the people he meets and locales he visits. Notably, this account includes his recollection of working as a gold miner in California and focuses on California gold mining in general.
