Destinatario non identificato ma comunque una persona con conoscenza nel settore degli studi orientali e coinvolto in campo politico. Böhtlingk si mostra preoccupato di non aver ricevuto ancora sue notizie ("E' fors…e andata persa una sua lettera? Siamo già seriamente preoccupati per Lei, o forse nel trambusto della vita politica si è dimenticato di noi?") poi accenna ad un suo lavoro ("In brevissimo tempo sarà pronta la prima parte dei miei proverbi 'Indische Spruche', detti proverbiali indiani, come ricordo dei bei giorni trascorsi da noi, vorrei donarLe in omaggio un esemplare. Quindi sarà cos gentile a scrivermi dove devo mandare il libro"). Offre notizie dettagliate sul dizionario dettagliando la lettera, in sanscrito, dove è arrivato. Conclude con saluti calorosi e sentiti, specificando l'indirizzo che è quello dell'Accademia Imperiale delle Scienze a San Pietroburgo. Il Böhtlingk, dopo aver studiato lingue orientali, in particolare l'arabo, persiano e sanscrito all'Università di San Pietroburgo, continuò gli studi in Germania, prima a Berlino e poi a Bonn. Tornato a San Pietroburgo nel 1842, fu ammesso alla Reale Accademia di Scienze e eletto membro ordinario di tale società nel 1855. Nel 1860 fu nominato consigliere di stato russo, e in seguito consigliere privato con un titolo di nobiltà. Nel 1868 si stabil a Jena e nel 1885 si trasfer a Lipsia, dove ha risieduto fino alla morte.
