Rudolf Straubel (1864-1943) promvierte 1888 in Jena bei Carl Johannes Thomae promoviert 'Über die Berechnung der Fraunhoferschen Beugungserscheinungen durch Randintegrale mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Theorie der Beugung im Heliometer' und wurde danach Assistent am Physikalischen Institut in Jena bei Adolf Winkelmann. 1893 wurde er dort Privatdozent und 1897 außerordentlicher Professor. Er hielt Vorlesungen über theoretische Physik, Optik (besonders Beugungstheorie) und Geophysik. Bis 1919 leitete er auch die seismische Station. Ab den 1890er Jahren hatte er immer engeren Kontakt zu Ernst Abbe bei der Firma Carl Zeiss und wurde dort 1901 angestellt. 1903 wurde er Nachfolger von Ernst Abbe als wissenschaftlicher Leiter bei Carl Zeiss in Jena und Mitglied der Geschäftsleitung.
