L'humaniste Guilielmus Xylander (1532 - 1576) a été nommé professeur de grec de l'Université de Heidelberg à l'âge de vingt-cinq ans. Il édita et traduisit de nombreuses uvres de l'Antiquité, dont les "Eléments" d'Euclide, et apporta d'importantes contributions à la diffusion des mathématiques.
